Wow! been out for a week and now I have a way to make about $300.  Thanks for the pointer.    I can't wear them to work, but I save them to work on the car
Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

In my house, if my dad saw you wearing pants or pajamas with holes in them, he'd lure you over to him, and he'd reach out grab the hole and rip them off of you or tear the whole leg off. Never got into wearing holy jeans,  now i do remember washing them lots to make them faded as brand new jeans kind of stick out, but holes....nah, not for me, that for poor folks to wear, used to hate having patches sewn in  to  make them last...we didn't get new clothes till you grew out of the old ones.

Have to admit that I kind of followed my dad's lead and if my teenage daughter came out with torn ragged out jeans, i'd do what i needed to ruin them for her, we can afford new clothes, not worn out whacked out clothes.

Those jeans are able to be sold like that today because they represent hard work and and character. Something that most of the youth culture of today have no clue about. Those are the jeans that the rich kids buy with their parents money.
