That car is an old friend for a couple of reasons.   My brother in law had that car as a demo at Hub Chrysler Plymouth in 1970.   I think there is a photo of it in their old photo album.

About 1979, my dad bought the car from a local guy in Milwaukee.   He did some driveway restoration work to the lower quarters (interesting photos!) which the car still has.

In the summer of '79, dad let me drive the car to Michigan and back for the national meet.  Pretty nice gig for a 17 year old.    Here is the car on the Proving Grounds oval.    The guy with the car (I think) is John Bott from Ohio.   Pretty sure he rode with me on the tour.

The whitewalls were radial tires.  I had never driven a car with radials before, and I remember it went down the road really nice.

The car got sold to a man in Appleton Wisconsin.  I think it was there the whole time until it was sold and wound up in the magazine.    It doesn't have many more miles on it compared to when we sold it.

I still remember the old Hub Chrysler commercial that asked "is there a Hub tag on your car?"

I still remember the old Hub Chrysler commercial that asked "is there a Hub tag on your car?"

I was just thinking about that moments ago.  Someone must have that jingle as an audio file.   It was catchy!

The "new" dealership built in 1970 was torn down last year and is a pile of crushed stone 30' high.  It was the last of the 60's style Chrysler showrooms in the area.   Although the dealership was profitable, Chrysler wanted fewer dealers in the area.   They facilitated the deal where the dealership was sold and consolidated with another Chrysler dealer on the other side of town.   Chrysler owns the land now.

Hub was named because of the original location in the "hub" of West Allis at 59th and National Avenue.

A friend knows the owner.  I just got wind of this bird in August.  I wanted to go see it and take some photos for reference for my car.

The owners name is Kent.

black scoops!

Is that thing really worth 70k?  Common color, 4bbl, bench, auto...  Auction guess for me would be 62k.

That VIN is 10 higher than mine. Also a Milwaukee car but not from Hub.

Guess I just do not guess so well on Birds huh? Not a car I like. Now if it was a bench seat 4 speed that I would like.

That's a great story, and a very interesting pic. What are the chances we ever get to go on the Proving Grounds again?

Good question.   With a little more luck, it could have happened when we were in the area in June.   But we did not get the right connection with enough lead time to make it a go.

hell 65 should have taken it!
still say 60  tops  :icon_smile_big:

Not going to disagree there.  Pour $60k into it and have a $100k car when done.

Friend of mine says he saw the car a local cruise night in Morris IL last Saturday. Said it was for sale for $69K.

If they see him again ask if he'll take $69,976.08

Ok, so I may be making a play for this one. I won't pay 70k for it. Like what was said before, its a 440 4 bbl column car that really needs a total resto. It is pretty cool as it sits but that would get old and one would want to make it really nice. Even though its the top pick for me on color, I really want a 4 speed car. So even if I get it for 60k and do all the work myself I will be near 90k into it after probably years of work. The debate in my mind is do I save for another 5 years and buy a nice low mileage car that maybe has had one repaint or do I make the leap and purchase this one and scrimp and save and invest blood sweat and tears into this one.  :scratchchin:

1970Moparmann

I don't think you will get it for $60k.  With this being said, right now in todays market, I would find a nice car for $85 ish (like the one that just sold on Ebay) , put what you have down, and finance the rest.  In 5 years you never know what will happen.  Based on seeing these cars value go down a year ago, I was able to finally get one.   :2thumbs:

If it were me, I would pass on it.  First it is not a 4 spd, that will bother you a lot over time to the point you may want to sell it for a 4 spd.  Second, price is really not that good, needs a lot of work, in the end will cost more than one already done.  Hang onto your cash, and keep looking, in the meanwhile keeping adding to the money you are saving for the car.  In the end you will be better off all away around.  Quite a few Superbirds come on to eBay for sale, maybe you will get the right one and be ready to cruise next spring!

Aero426

Get in the game now if you can.     You can always trade up later.    There's always someone wanting to get in on the lower end.

Not having a 4-speed in a Superbird isn't the same as other non-wing cars, because well, it's still a Superbird.

69_500

If it was me and my dream was a Superbird I would go for it. My dream is a 4 speed Daytona but I realize my best bet is to buy any Daytona that comes up that I can afford. And if in the future one I would rather have comes up try to make a deal/trade for it.
