What dia axles 30 spline , are they the same regardless of rear end , are 8 3/4 the same dia as the smaller duty rear ends ,
The reason I'm asking is friends project, 63-64 tapered spline axle 8 3/4 , rebuilding the pig with a traclock unit , going to remove the axles and replace them with standard tapered bearing axles, any one done this upgrade and what are straight swap in's , problems I might encounter ,

As far as swapping around later (1965-74) 8 3/4 axles into early 8 3/4 housings, the spline count is the same, but housing ends where backing plates bolt on and the bearings are WAY different. Early 8 3/4 (Tapered axle) used SHIMS to set axle bearing end play. Later ones used spanner nuts. Also, the hog's head may or may not be the best option for use. Many were light duty.

About the ONLY thing that's interchangeable is the chunk.

Here's the differences...Early axle on top, later one on bottom.

Early axle seal on left and later on right...Notice the differences in sizes.

Not sure what you mean by "standard tapered bearing axles" but if you mean you want to put later flanged axles in a '63-'64 it can only be done by using the "Green Bearings". The pre-'65 axle housing ends are too shallow to accept the later flanged axles with the factory tapered bearings because the bearing collar will hit the inner oil seal. The Green bearing is a sealed roller bearing and it can be run without the oil seal.

The other problem you'll encounter is the axle length, there is no factory flanged axle that is the correct length for use in the '63-'64 housing, you'll have to go to aftermarket axles; Doctor Diff can supply these.

BTW, there is a difference in '63-'64 B-body rear ends, the '64 is way wider than the '63.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Thanks Cooter, John, yes already looked at doc diff, I think you also encounter a difference in length to axles also slight but enough to be a pain in the rear,
been years since I had converted one, started with a 63 Australian assembled phoenix , and after getting drums of as a kid, developed a hatred for these tapered spline axle rear ends
I was planning on cutting ends off , using new end's from Doc diff so I could use later axles and tappered bearings with adjustable collar,
742 pig for centre, friends car and he is using what he has , 8 3'4 thin on the ground in here in Aust,
