Got mine in '06.

Had to wait till last year to have a decent shop to get really going.
So to keep it short, since '06 all that has happened so far is the car being from a rolling shell onto a rotisserie and she's ready to media blast now.

I know; I know but I'm getting more and more up to speed as we speak.
But still I dont see it on the road again in the next 3 or 4 years...

NOS is nice, turbo's are neat, but when it comes to Mopars, there's no need to cheat...

I HOPE You mean, 'add it up'.  If you average up 7 cars x ~20 = 140 years of no use!  Wow!!

Nope.

I've had each one an average of roughly 20 years.

Had my charger for 35 years, it sat for 27 years in storage in my garage without having anything done other than tearing off the top.  I've been working on it gradually the last 7 years or so.

Gee,I was hoping this topic never came up.........  :RantExplode: seems the closer I get to retrieving her, I get bumped back a coupla steps, I've owned it now 14 yrs. been in storage the last 12.... my bro is knocking the dust off her now... still 1400 miles away, but soon...very,very, soon
If life's a Highway, then your soul must be a car....

HANDM

Sat on it for 20 plus years, "restored" in in 2011, been sitting ever since.... :(

myk

How do we define "doing nothing" with the car?  I've owned mine since '94 and have driven it since I bought it, but I never took care of the car and basically let it fall apart over the years.  I didn't start to make amends to the car until last year; now I've sworn to maintain and continue improving it.  Neglecting the Charger is one of the worst things I've ever done with my life...

hemi-ed

Can anyone beat my record?  I have had mine for 38 years.  Within this last month I got it to roll under it's own power since 1981.  It's been a long time sitting.

Gee this thread kinda makes me happy (a bit).

I thought I was lazy and going slow but it seems that alot of other guys also have serious lack of free time......

I need to find a way to make twice as much money in one day so I can stop working after 1/2 a day and spent more time in the shop  :D

got my charger april 89 ( was a two owner car & was being daily driven with regular trips to new mexico & oklohama city  , from kerrville TX ) before i bought  it.
late 92   decided not to drive it any more , cause of the old wiring & stuff already ! , had to do a  mini  rewire with  the dash harness & back up lamp harness  ::) , plus already had less than good fix on a engine harness meltdown ,    put it into storage 93 -99ish ( then 3 year nut & bolt resto ) , while saving money to do the resto & locating the only 3 missing parts i needed , the rest would be repop stuff , then life got in the way  & also  got involved with buying & repairing accident / salvage cars in my free time , as if i never had enough doing it as a day job :slap:  ,  should of taken a picture after I brought it out of storage almost 7 years  , was covered in thick dust coved in spiders webs & stuff , i would turn the motor over regular ,  had oil in the bores , day i got it out of storge , removed plugs  refitted rocker shafts / arms  ,  pre oiled the motor ,  then spun it over on the starter few times , fitted plugs , poured fresh gas in the tank ,   turned the  electric pump on for a few seconds  ,  pumped the gas 6 times  2 short cranks i think it was ,  :scratchchin: :P   it fired up ,  after almost 7 years of silence ,  man that sound  :drool5: :drool5:   through true duel 2 -1/2 "  exhausts with glass packs
love these cars  :yesnod: :icon_smile_approve:

Purchased by myself in 77' for $125.00. Originally equipped with a 383-2barrel, 4-speed/console. I pulled the original engine out in 78' for a 440 6-bbl.
Car last rolled in 85' and sat under a carport until last year.
Giant-scale R/C airplanes was the cause of neglect.
She's now my new project...

Mine sat for one year before I started on it. After than I think the longest break I took was probably two months during the eight years I've been working on it. The best advice I think I got was to do something on it every day, even if that meant just tightening a couple of screws. It kept things moving even though the progress was hard to see.

Anyone of you guys with multiple Chargers sitting in the garage, be interested in selling a 69' Charger if you have one that you don't think you will ever finish ??....doesn't hurt to ask!  :icon_smile_big:

I lost motivation a couple months ago and I mean big time. Had the car for sale even... Now I decided to keep going no matter how slow it goes. Hat off to guys like you that keep going for 8 years.
Now I want to keep going at a minimum of 6 or 8 hours a week. really cant spend more time at it form time to time.
I remember from my last full restoration that the day your car has new paint it starts to go alot better to stay focused...but its the welding and grinding sh*t that kills motivation every project again...

Doing a little everyday is how I do any big project. Saves all of the time catching up were you left off.. :2thumbs:

That is actually good advice,  for a long term project such as this,  sometimes you just get tired of working on cars, but i try to force myself to do something, however minor on the car each weekend, I have a chair and a TV in my garage (as well as a laptop) its pretty much my mancave and I spend a LOT of time out there on the weekend, and not every moment is working on the cars,  but every weekend I try to do something with the charger and something to the stealth turbo sitting next to it and eventually I'll have one to keep and one to sell, and with the slow pace of things, I'll get to see both go up in value as they get older.

Today, I painted the roof of the stealth black, and on the charger installed the replacement hood hinge on the charger, only to have the inner hood bolt bar come loose again, thought i'd welded that secure but it broke loose inside the hood and I can't get the 2nd bolt in to hold the hood secure, can't shut the hood without fixing it, so now i have something else to work on tomorrow or next weekend.

69 ROCKET

Ive had my charger for approximately a year, i try and start it every couple of weeks. All ive done is buy parts for it, but hopefully will start the build in the next month.

Hansson

six years doing nothing, 3kids, house and work eats garage hours. Hopfully this winter the charger can get some attention.

The green 69 RT in my avatar was bought as a project in Jan. of 1999. One year later in Feb. 2000, I bought another that eventually became my parts car. I got married in Sept. of 2000, and between 2002 to 2008, I had 3 kids, bought a house, basically everything starting my life.

Pretty much from the time I bought it until late '08/early '09, my car sat in the garage. During that time I stripped the parts car, sold off what I didn't need, bought up parts when I had extra cash, and did small 'resto projects' like restoring the grille, console, cleaning/painting parts I planned on re-using, etc. In early 09 is when I got serious about doing my body work, By fall of 2010, I finally painted it. Reassembly went down hill from there... to me it seem like the biggest hump to over come was body/paint.

I work a job that during the spring/summer months I work a lot of overtime, so that limits how much I can work on my projects, so most of the work performed was done during fall/winter months. Also along the way, I worked on cars on the side, bought/flipped a few cars, to fund my project.

I will say this also, I don't know if its because I'm in a different stage in my life, or because I got one build "under my belt" seems like my 68 project is moving along a lot faster than the 69 did. I pretty much have all the metal work done (had to replace floor pans, trunk floors, and patch a few places here and there) and it ready to start all the filler work and priming.

QuoteShame, shame. You could have been in the 1 of 74 club. Do you still have the original engine?

Yes, it is a shame. I just realized its rarity after joining this Forum.
I had the engine up on blocks behind my girlfriend's house, Uncle Sam called, followed by the proverbial 'Dear John' letter, so its gone.
I actually just located some old pictures from 77' with me pulling the engine. Amazing the things we accomplished by ourselves at that young age - like lying on your back, pressing the A-833 into position...

What's more of a shame are the cars and parts I remember being crushed, and/or discarded for junk. My Mopar interest began around 1974-76 and anything could be had for a few dollars.

HeavyFuel

Bought it in 1991.....let it sit while I was raising a family, and during that time Dodge Fever festered into a full blown addiction.

Started on the restoration 6-7 years ago, and got it on the road for the first time a couple months ago.

Bull has the right idea....do not let the scope of the project weigh you down.   Bite off small pieces, keep at it, eventually you'll get there.

Anyway...the answer for me is around 15 years.

Old Tired Rebel

I have had my 74 for a year and a half. I hope to get started on it soon.

Bandit72

mine's been sitting for going on 7 years now...I pull it out of the barn and clean the dust off about every 2 years and tell myself i'm going to start on it but it's always right about then that something comes up  :brickwall:
Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

Sendero

This is for all those that stare.. for years... at a torn-apart mopar in the garage and despair.

My brother bought it in 88 and he tore it down to restore in 1990. Then life happened. My brother had the car stripped for over 20 years. Nothing done.
Many times wondering what the hell was he was thinking of.
Here it is 20 years later.
