Charger Hood

Went to see a 70 Charger a few weeks back that is coming up for sale, a few areas need some cosmetic attention but the main thing is that the hood is rusted out with some bubbling and is rusty underneath of the hood on the edges etc, the thing is i'm in the UK so it's not going to be cheap to import a new or used hood, but if I did can anyone recommend the best place to get one apart from the obvious Ebay etc

I know I could get a bodyshop to sand down the bubbling and fill and paint it the current one etc but I know the rust will eventually start to show again, any alternatives to this issue ?

Thanks

As far as I know, the '70 hood isn't being reproduced as of yet.
'73 Cuda 340 5spd RMS

'12.5 450SX FE

Daytona R/T SE

The '70 Hood is the toughest one to find.

Most of them are rusted out in the front cross brace area.

I wound up making most of the front inner structure myself

to save the only otherwise straight hood I could find.

JMF, by chances could you post some pictures on the hood on your side of the pond? Rust bubbles can be a funny thing, sometimes they are caused by nick's in the paint and after being cleaned up and repainted they don't return. But, they can all so because the rust is eating it way out from the inside. If you push on them and they make a crunching sound it will more than likely become a hole.

Rust can be stopped with today chemicals and a proper repair is done!

Far as the hood offered up by Spooling Hard, I will say this! He took some darn good pictures trying to show faults in the hood! Pictures generally make the part look better than in person by a person with a eye knowing how to look for flaws. From the pictures I would bid 15 to 20 hours labor to fix the hood. I have done than my fair share of Charger Hoods and if they look great at first they still will be a pain to get straight.

Here's some pics, didn't get any of the underneath of the hood i'm afraid but it was a little bit crusty if I remember

I think i'll probably just repair it, lead fill it maybe ?

Only one way to fix that, cut it out and patch it.  Filling with anything will be temporary and a waste of time, effort and money.  It's a very easy fix for a body guy though.

Yep they will be holes. I wont say a easy fix (bottom side picture's would help) I would bid around say 8 hours of labor. If the rest of the hood looks great, depending on the cost it might be worth it.

You make a good point so let me rephrase.  It will take a good body man (or woman) quite a while to do it right, but he or she will know how to do it right because he or she is a good body man (woman).  And because he or she is a good body man (woman), he or she will find the work easy.  There.   :icon_smile_big:

Mine had to be disected too. Inner was full of pinholes.
finding a decent 70 hood at a fair price is tought. That ebay hood at $300 looks like a pretty fair deal. lip looks tight and didnt see any rot underneath.
