Had a running 383 in my charger. Just swapped in new 440. Car will try to start but won't. No spark to plug wires. Had new msd dist in it. Thought pickup was bad. Switched to old distributor that we used to test motor on stand. New carb and fuel is there. Old dist gives same result as new msd. Crank but no fire. I have my msd box hooked up correctly etc. Any ideas?

Did you test for 12V supply to the MSD?

I have it connected to 12v source when key is on. Source shows 10.6 v

I then connected directly to the battery for true 12v and got same result

Bulkhead connector..check for volts on inside, but not on outside.

I'm not sure its the bulkhead. This waas a running and driving car before the 383 was pulled. The msd box, coil and old distributor were run on test stand without issue.

Everything works as needed except coil has no spark. Wires are there. Msd box and coil are new from summit.

I figured this was with the old dist.  Must have been talking bout with the MSD.

It COULD be a bad MSD box. Certainly not unheard of. I know it [MSD] doesn't like to work well under 13 Volts. It'll work, but not right.

It sounds like the small red trigger wire is not connected properly. The small red needs 12v to power up the box and you need 12v in the start and run postions. Brown & blue wire on the bulkhead connector need to be tied together and connected to the small red.  :yesnod:

I am sure it's just a mix up somewhere but your 10.6 V is pretty normal DURING start because of draw from the starter.

Follow Firefighter's lead, take all of the wires that were originally connected to the ballast and tie them together, then hook that to the small red wire on the MSD.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

69dodge383

Yep. Got the ballast issue solved. Getting 12v now.I also found out my new msd billet has a bad pickup. I was fighting two battles here. I put in my old distributor and wired it to the box and blaster coil. Car got spark and tried to start. I think I may be a tooth off on the timing. I am going to pull the no1 plug and line it up. I will keep you posted.
