So i have an oil question. i sold my last 7.3 superduty recently some might remember the one that got flipped during the test drive. i switched to synthetic when i only had 80k miles on it so i knew i was good, went from mobil 1 15w50 dino to mobil 1 diesel syn 5w40 in it and had no issues. this new truck i have now has 260k miles on it and i want to change the oil soon but ive got no clue whats in it now... at that mileage and the couple leaks it has now i want to stay with what ever it has now since switching the a syn can clean the gritty leak stoppers that could be there are helping. the last owner was in idiot and a liar and he told me he doesn't know and had the same shop for years do it so i would assume dino oil. so assuming this should i just say screw it and run dino? If so what kind will be good for this old 7.3? if not could getting the oil tested tell me what its got and just run good syn diesel oil?

The biggest mistake I see people make when running synthetics is they tend to think the oil filters will go 10k miles as well..
Even the Amsoil rep will tell you that you can push the oil that far, but you still need to change the filter more often.

I always changed my oil, oil filter, and fuel filter every 5-7k miles

Hard to beat Rotella 15W-40 in a diesel pick up. I have ran it in all my trucks 1 7.3 PSD and 4 cummins trucks.
I have 3000 miles on the oil in my 01 24V cummins and the oil is still amber in color. I change it around 8-10k miles with a good NON fram filter.

I wouldn't go to synthetic on any engine with that many miles on it...............Get some Rotella from Wally world and run it.

Alright so rotella it is!

Not sure where you are located. In the winter that 15W-40 is like pudding in the pan when it gets down much below freezing. I don't run my truck much, so if its cold and i know i'm going somewhere i will plug it in. I figure the oil gets warmed slightly ?  If i was to run it daily i'd either put on an oil pan heater, or run some 5W-40 or 10W30.

i ran 15w50 for years before switching to 5w40.

x4, but use the Rotella "T" if it's turbo charged.
