I'm doing some paint removal from the engine bay. I'm stripping it down to bare metal but I'm doing it in small areas at a time. can i spray self ecth primer on the spots that I have done so it want flash rust? when I'm done I will be spraying it with ex poxy primer then paint.

Just use good quality epoxy on there, no need for etch primer.

if the epoxy sits on the car for awhile and fully cures what will it take to add like a poly primer or paint over it at that point?

Scuff with about 200-300 grit, wipe with degreaser, paint.   Good idea to do this, no matter what the primer.

I wouldn't recommend painting over 200-300 grit. I like to strip engine bay all in one day. I prefer to Use Self etch wash Prime & then epoxy. Now it can sit protected for weeks or months. PPG Epoxy must be scuffed after 7 days sez data sheet. some others are 72 hours or less. Some skip the wash prime & go right to epoxy. many different ways to do it.  If solid color I paint over 400 grit after sealed & if metallic I paint over 600 grit after sealing. LEON.

For what its worth, I wipe the bare metal with a prepsol, than go over that with a metal etching product. Then I use SEM Metal self etching primer,  is sold in aerosol cans and as a sprayable product.   Works well for me

Yeah, you're right, I should have added another prime coat or sealer in there to cover the scratch marks...good advice.   But you do need to scuff the hardened primer to get the next coat to stick.  By the way, you (hemi-Hampton) got a thread on your car, looks interesting!!

Yes it is. Same car. After Paint & body work owner took it home do install the Motor & Interior himself. That was 3 years ago. I just stopped by his house to look at it & his progress about 3 weeks ago. After 3 years, he has the Motor & Trans in & Interior but still needs Convertible Top installed. I did not get a pic of it since he was in a rush to go out with the wife, I stopped by unexpectantly. Looked good though. LEON.

Far as I know it's one or the other but not both together. Once you go over metal with a etching product then there is no longer a need to use a self etching primer. Part of the reason for using a self etching primer is so you don't have to mechanically chemically etch with metal cleaners & metal preps.
