I received a 1971 Superbee stripe kit, minus the hood decal, back when I purchased my 1972 Charger in 2004. I have never put the stripes on and they have been out of the box since 2004 in my garage. Are they still good to use? Should i just chuck them and buy new? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Joe

That's a tough one.  If they were made well then they should be fine although I would make sure they are nice and warm to reactivate the glue.  If the stripes are longer than what you need you can cut off a small piece and try it out.  Warm it up with a heat gun or hair dryer, stick it on a painted surface and leave it for a few days.  Then see what it takes to remove.

I wouldn't be afraid to use it.  Pull back the backing paper in one corner to see if the adhesive is still sticky.  I've used 10 year old vinyl with no problems.

You won't need to worry about shrinkage. (unless you're my age)  :shruggy:

Lord Warlock

getting the backing paper off in one piece is more like the thing to be concerned with, i had a stripe that I bought 10 years ago, that went on pretty well, both sides went on great, the piece on the trunk however had some trouble getting the backing paper off and it came off in lots of small pieces leaving traces, after the install there are a few noticable bumps under the vinyl which will make me want to replace it again with a newer one, however, its good enough to leave on until i'm done with everything else.  A 4 year old stripe should be fine still.

The first stripe I attempted to put on my 69 was one I got a great deal on from a member that had bought it a few years earlier, but never used it, then sat in my shop for a couple of years until it was time to install it.  I installed the left side first, everything went ok until I began pulling off the transfer tape. It wouldn't pull off the stripe easily and pretty much pulled the stripe back up with it. I ordered a new one, no problems installing. Since that happened, I never order any stripes or decals until it's time to install them. Since you already have them, I guess you got nothing to lose to try and see, but don't be surprised if you have to buy a new stripe kit.

Good Luck,
Jason

Mark from grave yard cars talked about laying down a fresh set of graphics as if it were very important. like use with in days of being cut.

TIP*  If the transfer tape is the paper type, you can wait til the sticker/stripe has tacked off, then spray a little water onto the tape. This releases the transfer tape adhesive and makes it easier to remove.
Gotta love a '69

This is true for many types od graphics as they tend to shrink as soon as they get cut.  Once in place they keep their original shape.  Depending on the type of backing the shrinking may be limited or it may actualy wrinkle the backing paper.

Well I did it and finally installed the stripe kit. It went on well, especially for a first timer doing the install. I did have trouble with the door stripe and fender lining up correctly though.  Thanks for the help guys!

See what you mean about the door/fender line-up.

If you could possibly just buy a new door only stripe (new) it might be a fix.
But I doubt if it's available un-kitted.
Unless you could find the actual manufacturer and sob to them.

@ jlatessa
The Stripe kit was from Year One I believe, and the guy i bought the car off of bought the kit in 1998. I don't know if they sell the full kit or not. Phoenix graphic has the full kit for $300.00.
I might try to reheat that door section and see if it will stretch it tonight.
