Has anyone used the Richmond Gear solid spacer? They list 2 diferent part numbers and it is not 100% clear to me what the difference is between 836 - 04-0013-1 and 836-04-0013-S The first one apears to be just the spacer the other one looks to be a spacer and shims. It is not clear whether I need both. Any first hand info would be great

Yes, the -S includes the shims and you'll need them.

Make sure you do your homework if you're planning to install it yourself. You'll need a set-up bearing. Either buy one or make one from an old rear pinion bearing.

John are you saying I need to buy both items? or do I just need 836-04-0013-S

471 I understand the principle of the solid spacer and shim pack and how it replaces the crush sleeve. What is a "set up bearing"

Two sets of shims. One set is used to set the pinion depth, which go behind the rear bearing. The other sets the bearing preload. The set-up requires some trial and error, when setting the pinion depth, you need to remove the rear bearing (which is a press fit) multiple times (unless you're really lucky). A set up bearing has larger ID so it will slip on. Once you figure required shim pack, you press on the new bearing.

I've made my own set-up bearing by hogging out the ID of an old bearing with a die-grinder.

If you're just replacing the crush sleeve, reusing the ring & pinion and bearings, then all you have to do is set the pre-load, which won't require removing the rear bearing.

Are you setting up a new R&P? Or just replacing the crush sleeve?

If you are re-using everything, make sure you measure and record the back-lash setting prior to dis-assembly so you can hit the same number on re-assembly and keep things running quiet.

I am just going threw the rear. I have a bad bearing and just want to upgrade as I go. The gear set is already set up right. I just wanted to clearify which part number I needed to eliminate the crush sleeve. I do not need to set the pinion depth

You only need the -S, it includes the spacer and the shims.
