Original Steal Wheels

I still have the original steal wheels for my '69.  I don't put them on the car and I'm planning on buying new wheels soon anyway.  I've been lugging and storing these wheels for 23 years now and I'm starting to wonder if its worth hanging on to them for another 20? Thoughts?

Lord Warlock

Do you ever intend to enter the car into a show that may count stock wheels higher than aftermarket? if not, ditch the wheels.  (i'm one to talk, i have some 14 inch magnum 500s that i have no intention of using, but they're still on the shelf in the garage, have followed me through three houses and 30+ years) If you don't plan on selling the car and letting it go with the factory wheels so you can sell the aftermarkets, I'd strongly consider selling them off, you can always buy new steel wheels at a price less than a majority of cheap aftermarket rims if you change your mind.

Thanks for the reply.  That what I thought.  I just wanted a second opinion.

If you keep them, they will never be worth a dime.  Once you get rid of them, they'll become gold.  That's how it goes right?   :icon_smile_big:

Steel wheels can fetch a few bucks, especially date coded, but I'd sell them regardless.  I also have a set of 14" road wheels with trim rings I need to get rid of.  I don't care what they might be worth in the future, they're in my way.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

What size? What dates? Always looking for original wheels.

Original wheels with markings can be worth a bunch to someone who is doing a "numbers" restoration.

Throw them into the garbage with the drum brakes and the factory-ammeter gauge...

Lord Warlock

Some people would buy them if they are in good condition, I wouldn't mind having one with factory sized tire and the deep dish wheelcover for the trunk spare, but I'd need to fix the floor before i worry about a spare, so it may be a while.

Before you throw them in the dumpster, contact either me or maxwellwedge.
Just might be interested in them, especially if they are 15"s!  :yesnod:

I guess you gotta ask yourself if it's really that important to you. Will you sit around wishing you still had the original wheels in the attic once they're gone or will you give it a second thought? If you really don't have plans to ever sell the car or use the wheels, ditch them. After 23 years I think you've paid your dues, and it doesn't seem as if you're too likely to use the wheels.
