Any Harley guys here?

So i'v been wanting a harley latley (i think its a mid life crises) so i joined up on a harley forum and couple guys there told me they also had Chargers, so i'm thinking you guys are also on here.

Anyway I haven't done a deal yet all depends on a couple of shipping quotes im waiting to hear back from, but i've come across a bike that's a 81 fXWG for about 7,400 its numbers matching, has had some mods, comes with original tins and seat, but its been rebuilt and its a bike that does not need any work and can get on and ride, Need something I can enjoy while the charger is getting restored.

Here is a picture, Options please

Thanks

My arms are tired just looking at those ape hanger handlebars. :Twocents:

I'd buy something at least 20 years newer, unless you want to work on it all the time.

Bandit72

I don't mind Harleys....too bad i can't stand 95% of Harley riders...

If you want a nice affordable bike that you don't have to work on all the time, look into Yamaha's Star line up...plenty of great looking bikes for about Half the price of them damn rattle traps.

Here's a picture of mine, 2003 Yamaha Roadstar 1600 43000 miles and counting!
Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

If you are going to spend mid $7000 there are a lot of options in soft tails and dynas that are much newer, ride nicer, don't leak, and more reliable. That is unless you want a classic Harley and not to concerned about a reliable daily rider. The old ones need constant TLC, and that's all good as long as you know what you are getting. That is neat little scoot you are looking at. I would love to tool around the neighborhood on it. Just wont be easy to stay on for any length of time.

Last year I sold my dyna, bought this last month. I have been on HDForums.com quite a bit. Just getting info to sort out little problems it had like the radio sounds like chit, fairing mounts broken, etc.

I own and ride a Harley but I'm not a "Harley guy" and wouldn't want to be caught standing next to one of the Harleys that some people think are cool....including the one in the OP.

BTW, "numbers matching" on a Harley isn't a big thing.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Be careful, in 1981 Harley's were built by AMF (JUNK) not Harley Davidson. I rather own a Honda scooter than anything built by AMF.

I'm a motorcycle guy. In the world of bikes there seems to be two kinds. "The Harley guys" and everyone else. This is of course a generalization but it has kept me from buying a Harley over the years even though they made the V Rod.
I have met, worked with, and otherwise associated with Harley owners my whole life and as a rule they tend to snub any non Harley motorcycle. A friend and I were working out of town and he had an opportunity to rent a harley on our day off but he said since he left his colors at home he couldn't do it.
I asked him if the rental out fit also rented the uniform to go with the bike? :shruggy: His reaction caught me off guard. He was pissed. So I learned more about the Harley world. It is a kind of all be the same cult.
For me motorcycling is a personal freedom and my pleasure comes from the machine and the open air. The world of motorcycles other than Harleys is big and diverse. I am a motor head and there are many ways to move two wheels. A V twin is just one of them.

Get a Harley. Any Harley.

They run on gas, not rice.   :2thumbs:
I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

When I asked if there was any ''harley guys here?'' I was merely wanting to know if there was any harley owners here,  With out stereotyping I wasn't referring to the culture etc etc, Im just looking for a cool bike too mess about with on the weekends.

I love all bikes, my first was a Honda 125 when i was 16, Just always fancied a v twin see what all the fuss was about.

Thanks

This is the second Harley that I own now. I have had many bikes over the years. I prefer Harley right now. They just have an Americanness (word?) to them. They are loud, crude, heavy, and just a lot of fun to ride. Truthfully the brandx cruisers and sport bikes do everything better than a Harley equivalent. Except the sound and feel of a Harley. They just cant duplicate that.

I ride up to the Harley shop with friends and hang out, but I do not consider myself an extreme Harley guy, and you don't have to be to enjoy riding a Harley.

I don't own one. Don't even have a bike license but I LOVE THEM.  :2thumbs:

Tomorrow is promised to no one.......drive your Charger today.

Evolution69

I agree with you Paul G, The ''Americanness'' thing, yeah I can go and buy a brand new japanese sports bike thats faster, more reliable ect, but in my eyes their just not as cool as a Harley.

I would like to ride any motorcycle but I am 6'8 and would dwarf the biggest bike out there!! I do have a bicycle 32" with ape hangers!!!  :icon_smile_big:
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

I do gotta say, I'm all for american made, and if i could find as good of a Harley as i have in my Yamaha, sure i'd do it. I just can't bring my self to pay the inflated prices that you pay for the Harley name...call me weird if you like.  btw...i'm 6'3" 280#'s and my bike is VERY comfy for me and porportioned very well.

I've had so many bikes I lost count.  I've only ever driven a HD sportser and it was a fun ride, but I was still into taking actual corners back then so that was out...

All kidding aside, I don't recall what year it was made but the build quality was pretty poor.  Still, a good looking bike with a nice rumble to it.

I like 40 and 50's style bikes most, I'm not a fan of bikes that are as big as a small car, although I have owned one once.

The older bikes can be made to last longer with some aftermarket parts and small mods so it's not impossible to make one run like a champ but if you don't want to work on one, I'd listen to these guys and get something a bit more modern.

Ape bars are for apes.  I saw one not too long ago and I laughed my ass off, I had to pull over as I was losing it.  Man that guy looked ridiculous.   :smilielol:

Ape bars and ape mufflers.  When did this become cool again?  Hell why was it cool in the first place??

He could sit up on the back of the seat or on a phone book. That would allow for higher bars :eek2:

I like Harleys,  just never could afford one when I have too many cars to worry about fixing.  Still don't own one, and don't anticipate buying anytime soon since i'd rather spend the cash on fixing the charger instead.

However, if anyone is interested,  my dad has owned one since 2000, and he recently put it up for sale for anyone that is interested.  Its a 2000 Road King,  black with chrome add ons.  It has a little over 15k miles, and he's asking 8300.  The bike looks and rides like new, its kept in dry storage when not on he road, stored in his hobby car garage along with his 51 merc, two Volvo 544s, and an airstream trailer, and his other bike which he plan on keeping a Kawasaki 1000 crotchrocket.  He's living in Pensacola FL,  and the bike is listed on Pensacola Craigslist, motorcycle trader, and Harley trader online.  Its only been for sale about two weeks.

For someone that would spend 7300 on an older bike, you may want to look into it,  He's meticulous about taking care of it, and usually takes it to Daytona each year for bike week, but he's getting older (over 80 now) and can't keep up with all of his car and motorcycle toys.  PM me if you need contact info direct.  Or just look up the ad on craigslist, I posted the ad for him since he really doesn't do the internet himself, much.

The Road King sold today.  snooze and lose.  Someone got a great deal, at 8k.

I ride a harley but i am a motorcyclist, not a harley guy. I wear textile riding gear, a real helmet [color white] and my ride is...quiet.  Imagine that.

I ride what i ride because it's the best - large comfortable touring motorcycle.
If honda made a better motorcycle i would be riding that one...

As to the ape hangers and those of you who think are cool...very unsafe and not smart at all...more like juvenile...but i can't make good choices for you - only myself - so be sure your personal affairs are in order if you choose to ride a motorcycle like that.

Tilar

Yeah, this one sat so long the engine was froze up. Got the engine freed up a couple weeks ago and got it started last week. This one is more my speed than the 2 wheel models.

That's just too crazy. How can that even be legal.  The upside.......you won't go flying into the handlebars in an accident.
