Depends on what kind of wheeling you plan to do. I started out with a bone stock CJ5 for hardcore Rubicon Trail type driving. Then moved up to a 74 Bronco....same use but much more interior room and a hard top.
Finally bought a new short bed chevy 1/2 ton Silverado and carried a light weight 900lb FourWheel brand Pop-up camper.
This last rig was perfect for all the post-hardcore wheeling, fishing and camping I did. The pop-up is very well made  and had all the comforts of home. This combo allowed me to still drive deep into the sticks, wheeled very well and proved to be an awesome robust rig. I kept the truck completely stock (3.73's & 350/700R) a basic 3" Rancho lift with custom HD bumpers fore and after each with a Warn 8000lb winch.
Eventually went to a 2wd Silverado PU and now have a meticulously maintained 94 full size 4wd Blazer w/ Silverado trim. Love this SUV.

Keep the posses in the loop about what you're looking at. Good luck.

When you say 4wheeler, do you mean 4 wheeling a Jeep or truck, or an actual ATV four wheeler?  Jeeps are fun but I got tired of breaking shit off-roading and my Jeeps always became money pits... I have had several ATVs, but my favorite was a Honda 400EX, that thing was bad ass...  Lots of fun, fast, good with jumps, or riding on two wheels, ect...  It was only 2 wheel drive but I was never stuck...  Eventually sold it due to no land to ride it on, and got tired of being hassled by the fuzz where we used to take them in the woods...

Wife and I traded in our snowmobiles on ATVs when we retired to western mid-Michigan 4 yrs ago.
Absolutely love it.  She actually bugs me "to go trail riding" all the time.  Being retired, we go during the week mid-morning and seldom see anyone else on the trails.  We have many trail systems North of us to choose from; the 50" min width type that allow ORVs as well.  We're not into the mountain rock and river rock crawling - too old and feeble.

Mine is a 2009 Suzuki King Quad 450 (454cc), 4x4, L, H, Rev.   Year end deal that came with winch and snowplow which I use to plow our long gravel drive.  Hers is a year end deal 2009 Polaris Trailboss 330 (330 cc), 4x2, F, Rev.  She loves it and isn't afraid of getting into trouble from a bigger motor.

And now we're thinking of getting a side by side ATV w/ bench seat for taking the 2 grandboys along.   Right now they have to ride in the back of our '79 CJ7 if they go along.

Brand wise, to me it's a matter of dealer reputation near to your location.   Any brand/model can have problems and service friendly, parts friendly folks after the sale get my vote.  Otherwise, if it's used, search for an ATV forum dedicated to the brand and look for reviews, trouble spots, etc for the model and year being considered.  I do all my own maintenance w/ basic hand tools.  And get a pdf download of the service manual for whatever you end up getting.

Rather than monopolize the thread, give a holler if you want to discuss further.

I have an 08 Honda Rancher, bought it new, never had ANY trouble with it. Starts every time. I'm 6'2", 250 pounds and it hauls me around just fine. You can get bigger ones, but to me they get too big to ride around in the woods on tight trails.

I have had sport quads in the past.

Yahama banshee with a few modifications and a raptor 66 with lots of mofifications.

2 stroke is a beast in the pitt, but i preferred the torque of the 4 stroke.

Buddy had a yamaha grizzly 660. It had over 13000 miles on it and hadnt been rebuilt. I like my yamahas.

Winter trail riding was nice on the sport quads when its a smooth path. Once you have ruts nomore fun on a sport quad.

I'm looking to get a vintage sport Atc specifically a 86-87 Kawasaki Tecate 250.

Worked on a couple of Polaris 2-strokers with that oil reservoir and some kinda "Injection" for the "mix" oil. Stay away from those. POS.

Run fine one day, go out the next and you need new jug, piston, rings, whole new top end. junk IMO.
