440 engine questions

hey guys so im purchasing a 1974 440 with a 727 for 250 bucks and im torn between supercharging it with a cam headers and decent sized carbeurator and maybe different heads or just going all out and building a 512 out of a stroked 440. not sure which one will get me the most bang for my buck any help or numbers will help thanks

I'm planning the same build.  My research suggests that if you plan to stroke it, you might as well add heads to the list to take advantage of the extra ci.  Just a rough estimate for the stroker kit, head with port work, and valvetrain components.  I'm seeing about $5000, and the block machine work hasn't started.

I'm thinking a "value" build that gets you into the 600s for hp/tq  8k - 10k

Im just wanting to get 500hp+ from an engine with 284 stock

You will not be disappointed when going with the stroker. I would stay with the tried and true 493-505 Inch 440 combo. Call Hughes, Comp, Etc. for camshaft rec.

You might be surprised at how much power one of these engines can make. Typically in the 500-700 HP range.

A 1974 440 is a low comp engine. Will NOT make any decent power without at least a piston swap. Just FYI.

When I was building the motor BDS said a stock cast piston and crank was good for 500 HP.

Cost of the Blower, well I go a sweet deal. But from BDS 6-71, intake and drive would be around $3500.00 back when I built it. Idles like a stock engine and well there is power all though the curve.

Being stroked is great! My self, I rather be blowen!
