Imo, the key to the happy ending here is that the father was apologetic.  I think your original post would have been entirely different had he been a Richard.

I'm glad he understood.  I have been in similar situations where the parents become over-the-top defensive.  Which simply showed a lineage of poor parenting and leaving you questioning the future of our society.
