starting a new job soon, need a new ride

Hi guys,
how are y'all?

As some of you know, I am redirecting my (professional) life by studying criminology at the Brussels university.
I am aming for a job as a government official in the justice department.

My first job is a temporary post at the Federal refugee center for minors, working 2-3 night shifts a week. (from 8PM till 8AM)
I'll earn a good salary, have 3-7 days off between shifts.
In the mean time I am waiting for my last step in the selection procedure to become a member of the Justice Department...

Only downside....gonna need a new ride to commute 150-350 miles a week between home/work/university. (for work I can freely use the public transport)
I'd love to buy a nice old(er) but dependable truck since I won't let my Sheppard trash my '72 ...
Any thoughts?

Are there any diesel trucks that can fit the bill? Last time I was in your neck of the woods that was the preferred fuel. Are you looking for fuel economy primarily, or a full size truck? How old is older?

My vote would be 99-02 Chevy/GMC 2wd 5.3l. Decent on mileage, runs on 87, right now they are cheap to pickup with not alot of miles. If the motor blows up you can get another one from a junk yard for 500-1000$, and the trans is a 4l60E which is a decent trans if you keep the maintenance up.

Unless you have to haul alot of weight, then I'd look at some type of work truck/diesel.

It might sound a bit   but is a 80/90s Dodge D 150 a good alternative?
I want to get an autogas installation to lower the gas bill.

Not sure on the fuel mileage aspect of them, i suppose if they had a 318 and overdrive it could pull some decent numbers (for what it is)   but on a side note, them trucks sure are nice lookin!

They get around 15-18 mpg.  I find it kind of funny that trucks just seem to get around the same fuel mileage no matter what the truck is or how old it is, as long as it's been taken care of and hasn't been altered.  My old 89 Ram gets around the same mileage as a newer model.  Of course, my driving habits might affect that some.  I have a light foot.

89-93 2wd cummins powered W250 with a 5 speed. About the best mileage of any diesel pick up ever produced. Tough as nails and simple design no gadgets/electronics to mess up. 

Not pretty IMO but hey lol.

Don't forget to calculate how much you can budget for fuel & use that to help decide what size vehicle you can get. Full sized trucks really get poor MPG compared to compact ones & Mopar doesn't make a compact truck. Last company I worked for had a few V6 Dakotas that never saw anything better than 16 to 17 MPG.
