Never gave it any thought, but a charger rear window channel lends itself to a elcamino bed conv. better then say a coronet or satellite.

GOTWING

now i know where GM stole the design for the Avalanche from  :D

XS29L9Bxxxxxx

Looks like the rear 1/4s were elongated a bit  :scratchchin: Looks good, overall... Needs finishing, but good idea  :Twocents:

Ghoste

I've seen it done but not that one.  What are those Torino taillights?

hemihead

There used to be a 68 in Sharpsburg ,PA ( outside Pittsburgh )  back in the 80's like that . I looked at it when he put it up for sale . 383 2 bbl car . I wasn't impressed . It was kind of a joke around here .

Would be cooler if the tailgate was constucted out of the original tailpanel. Somehow a working gate with the original looks would be best, might have to go with 1968 taillights though.

Mike DC

Do any of you guys actually think that El-Camino-Charger thing looks decent?

Try photoshopping an extra foot onto the rear overhang of a '68, like that thing has.  From almost any angle it will look ridiculous.

--------------------------------

At least once a month we are ridiculing some ghetto-fabulous old Charger "rollin on dubs" in an Ebay ad.  I'll take any of those over this thing.  At least that kind of goofy stuff is reversible.

Ghoste

For me personally, no. I don't like charger convertibles or charger station wagon either. Myself I think they nailed the 2nd gen Charger perfectly and it just shouldn't be messed with.
But I don't own them all so its just another opinion.

F8-4life

I think its a great idea. Chrysler should went ahead and built one in '58 like they were thinking...Sure a charger ute will never look as good as the original car, but I think if one built it right it could be done without any associated barfing

I would opt for a shorter bed w/orginal 1/4s though.. because I do agree extending the quarters looks horrible.

Ghoste

I never realized Chrysler was thinking of doing one in 58, did it make it to concept drawing stage?

F8-4life

Im not entirely sure, I have some old hot rod mags form 57-60 era... They have articles about the "new" ranchero/elcaminos coming out and I swear I read chrysler was close to getting into the game but didnt. Chrysler was having qaulity issues around 1958 so maybe that contributed to the descision?

Old Moparz

Next thing we'll see is someone not taking the hinges off a Vega hatch & making a Daytona Hatchback & using the wing as the handle to open it.

:eek2:  Sorry, that abomination needs to rust out of existence...

djcarguy

All it needs is a bed cover a Daytona wing an some good 68 -69 taillights an weld the gate closed ,maybee some paint.

any idea where it is?? i would buy an save both those chargers for the right price, have ta bee kinda on the cheap side right now.  is that up in canada somewhere??

    :icon_smile_question: :icon_smile_question: maybee a dartcharo with a wing :icon_smile_question: :D :D :Twocents: :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

I agree and yet I immediately found myself thinking of ways to improve the tailgate design. As mentioned by a couple others it'd be cool if the gate was shaped like a real 68 Charger tail panel and the inner half of the tail light housing was integrated into it while the outer half stayed put. There's no way I would do something like this but it's fun to think about it.

Mytur Binsdirti

That's Jim Kramer's Chargerina. I got the grand tour of his place about 15 years ago & checked it out.

Darkman

Since it already exists, why not get it up and running and make the few suggested ideas about the rear tail panel and maybe shift the rear wheels further back. It honestly couldn't get any worse and it might give someone with some creativity (like Baldwinvette77) something to do and to actually make it work
Make it idiot proof, and somebody will make a better idiot!

If you think Education is difficult, try being stupid!

Baldwinvette77

This is screaming for a daytona wing and nose, and 68 roadrunner taillights and trunk trim  :coolgleamA: oh and a shaved rollpan would be neat too  :2thumbs:

really neat car, im just wondering why it ended up in a scrapyard, you really dont see alot of "projects" end up there  :scratchchin:

Better executed.  Is there a 3rd gen one that anyone knows of?

TPR

Hilarious. Never seen this pic before.
While I wouldn't recommend anyone ever do that to a Charger, there is something about it I don't mind.
It still has a little bit of integrity due to the fact that the 'coke bottle' shape is still present, albeit a bit longer than usual.
I think it looks better than the convertible mods you sometimes see. The proper taillights would improve the overall look.

68 charger taillites turned 90degrees so the twin round lite are stacked up an down an backup lite to the gate.some trim an blackout on gate like a charger butt. with more lip or spoiler on top of gate.shorten quarters or move rear end back too balance out the quarter.

its already hacked so refine an save it. would sure create a stir at shows.  just add a wing an stir the pott.lol lol :shruggy: :Twocents: :D :2thumbs: :icon_smile_question:   :2thumbs:

Nah I'm with mike on this one, that's why it was never finished , he pushed it out the Frankenstein lab , realised how ridiculous it looked and stopped wasting anymore time on it, phasers set to kill :hah: , but you need to shoot now

NJRBros

That 1st gen looks sweet!  :drool5: I'd take one! Not really a fan of the 2nd gen though..

do you know if he ever sells his rusty projects??

thanks for any info, maybee someone can buy an save those 2 chargers.  DJ west coast

Not for me, but cool concept.I just hope this wasn't an R/T or anything special. I always thought my 72 Coronet wagon would make a good ElCamino. I wish Chrysler came up with one in the US.

Ghoste

A Coronet from 71 to 74 would lend itself well to this. :Twocents:

DC_1

I think I remember seeing a pic recently of a Coronet being done.

My mistake.....it was a Polara

----------------------Have seen 2 wagons, ElMoparinos made into elcamino,a 66 fury an 68-69 coronet. yes you already have a tailgate, but the balance, scale is odd with the short 4door front doors an long back quarters too me .  i took a front end damaged, rusted out floor 66 belvedere 2door post that was missing both quarter windows. cut 18 in. out of roof an moved back window up to doors ,but it was a odd too short back bed area and got parted out to save 2 other 2 dr post rigs.  i save the doors an quarters for a 67 belvy wagon sedan delivery project.then the wagon owner sent it too the wrecking yard instead of selling it too me,was a red wagon in great shape.  i always liked the delivery idea 2 door anyway ,for a tow rig an camp at the track or show an keep dry an locked .    72 coronet wagon may look good as delivery or elmorino.moparino,ranchnetta..  photoshop it first, lots easyer an faster.      oh only paid $100 for the rusty floor 66 and it was 20 yrs ago still have the doors an quarters.still have my 2 67 belvys ragtop an 2dr post, seems if ya have body parts ya dont need them till ya get rid of them, then some moron runs into ya..    customize 4drs an wagon into something fun an different? dj :2thumbs:

It was outside just as the picture shows. it was rough back then & I'm sure that the passing of time hasn't helped.

70moparman

That first gen charger truck was done nicely... That second gen was done in the 70s or 80s and the owner was probably high or just learning how to do body work, but its actually kinda cool looking... That photo-chopped GTX looks pretty awesome ~ for a truck...

Mike DC

QuoteThat second gen  . . .        . . .  but its actually kinda cool looking...

Do you realize what the builder really did there?

He didn't just cut out the trunklid & window/filler area, he spliced the entire ass end of another car onto that one.  The whole car is like 1.5 feet longer than stock, and all of it hanging out past the rear wheels.  That's gotta look RIDICULOUS from any other angle.

nvrbdn

i agree with you on the extended length. i would like to see it shortened back to its original length and rear panel and lights restored. dont need a working tail gate.
