My stroked 318 has a stock set up distributor set for about 10 degree's BTDC at idle (750-800 rpm)
It runs well but when the pedal is to the floor I noticed it pings pretty bad recently. Always fill it with the premium gas and I checked it at around 3000 rpm in my garage and the timing went to about 32-34 degree's.
Is that too much and could cause pinging? When I bring the timing closer to 0 it idles like crap.

If it's the same as for a big block then total timing shoul dbe closer to 36-38 and all in by 2500.  Pinging does indicate you need to retard the timing though.  Was the timing set with vacuum advance an carb port capped?

Points ignition? Check the dwell.

Crap gas......To quote a "Ron word"  - The gas these days is Corn Piss.

1BAD68

It has a Edelbrock 750, no vacuum advance and a Pertronix ignitor instead of points.
Gas is questionable but I don't have high compression or anything 9:3 to 1 or something (from memory)

Just for testing purposes, can you have someone keep the rpm up while you retard the dizzy?  See when it stops detonating.  Just curious what reading you would have at that point.

This should not be too much timing for a mild 318 build no with vacuum advance.  I would looking at plugs or fuel delivery. How hot of a plug do you run?  Go to one colder plug and add a bit of fuel to the secondaries on the carb and go with that.
