68 Hemi Carbs

Is there anyone familiar with carburetors for a 68 hemi?  I bought my 68 hemi 4 speed Charger back in 1975 which had some modifications; headers, mechanical advance distributor, manual chock, ECT... I don't feel that the carburetors are correct.  May have a mixture of 68-67-68 hemi carbs.

The front Carter carb has the numbers 4139S stamped on the front of the casing, no numbers tag, and the rear has 4431S on the tag that is screwed to the top, no numbers stamped on the case.  Both carbs have that big brass air valve screw in the front between the two idle adjusting screws.

When I got the car the old owned had installed a mechanical advance distributor.  The problem is I have no vacuum advance from the rear carb.  The rear 4431S carb has a threaded hole for installing the nipple for the vacuum advance hose but this port goes nowhere. This port is not drilled out through the casing and goes nowhere; no vacuum advance through the carb.  Where do I get my vacuum advance?

All 68 4431S carbs I notice do not have the brass air valve screw.  And because there is no numbers stamped on the body, the body can be anything but a 4431S.  What do you make of this combination?

Can anyone give advice on the Carter clone carbs that are out there?

The 4431 is the right #, the 4139 is a 66 carb. I am guessing you actually have two 66 carbs judging from the air valve screws. Does the rear carb have correct throttle levers like a Hemi only carb would? If you don't know, I can help if you post a photo of it. The advance port is not a big deal if you just run without it but it is curious it is not drilled on a "rear" carb.
Even though the carbs are wrong for your car, you should be able to rebuild them and get it to run correctly.
I might be interested in that rear carb if you wish to sell it. If your car is a real Hemi Charger I would pony up and buy the correct carbs for it. Clone carbs will cost you half of originals but won't up the value of your car like real carbs will.

The throttle levers and linkage is all appear to be correct.  Will get some pics and post them tomorrow.  I have rebuilt the carbs years ago and have had it running but with no vacuum advance.  It is a true matching numbers hemi car.  You claim the advance would be no problem; how would you work it out?  I have noticed that original carbs for this engine would go around $3k.  Any suggestions on where to find them?

Thanks Max, will contact Scott for info.  Ed

Sheldon,

Any suggestion on where to find an original set of carbs, 4430s & 4431s?

Outside of the large swap meets like Carlisle or the Nats, you can try both carb specialists like Harms or Hemi specialists like Larry Shephard or Aruzza.

I know where you can buy 3 different sets of 68 Hemi carburetors (not mine), only one set is for the 4 speed application (about $3,000.00 and need a restoration), the other two are for automatic. Either will work fine on your car but only the 4 speed versions would be correct in terms of numbers. The other detail to consider are the assembly dates, what is your cars Scheduled Production Date?

I agree with the above poster, if your car is an original Hemi car I'd reccomend finding a correct set. If all else fails I can likely resurect the set you have now so they'll run, or I can build you some clones.

That may be the way to go.  I will look for a set.  Thanks guys.
