I don't mind seeing a few but it gets to be like a dealers lot if there are too many.

Yep, that burns my ass too.  They need to be at least 30 years old to be in a show.

Or offer something other than just sitting there stock.

I admit, I did take one shot of a new dart......... but only because it was so fugly!

I would bet a lot of that is folks that use it as an easy way to park at the show and bring in food/water/seats/etc with their daily driver dodge.

That's what I think too.  The ones who are most enthusiastic about them and don't just view them as cool daily drivers are the ones most likely to modify them in some interesting way.  A generalization for sure but I think with some truth to it.

I was told by management that we were within 50 cars of a record and I have to assume that was because of all the new vehicles that were there.  Without them, it wouldn't even be close!   :rotz:

Im willing to bet that the record includes many new era cars and anyone want to bet the PT Cruisers were a huge part of that. Remember when there were hundreds of them in attendance????
wingless now, but still around.

Fred

It's the same here. Whenever we go to a Chrysler show, they're lined up for miles. You can bet your last dollar that no one's come to see them yet there they are.
You'd think they're the best thing that's happened since sliced bread!

I was test driving the charger on Saturday after putting the old carb back on.  I was only minutes from a cruise that day but the closer I got, the more new cars I saw and it ticks me off.  Nobody wants to see your dime a dozen ride, the dealer lots are full of them.  I went back home and ran into a guy from my sub who owns an old Camaro in mint condition.  We spoke for a few and he just returned from the cruise, spent all but 20 minutes there because the amount of new and newer cars was higher than classics.

I don't get it but I'm not going to fight it, I'll just stay away from shows and cruises.

And what happened at some of these big shows to the age requirement anyway?  There used to be one at Columbus.  I suppose they need the numbers to fill the coffers but its a self defeating way to do it.

Exactly.  I remember going to shows where an entrance sign said no cars made after 1980.  I'm biased and would like to see a Delorean if one shows up so I'd move it to nothing after '83.   :icon_smile_big:

It's probably true that they need the numbers and thus let anyone in, but that defeats the entire purpose.  I do not want to pay to get in a show to see the cars I see every day.  I may be alone in this but I do believe there's more classic car owners that don't do shows because of it.  I'm done with it, I'd love to meet a bunch of folks on here but I don't think it'll be at a show.

Maybe I can meet a few when the power tour comes to Detroit (if it still does that after chapter 9).  At least I can just drive to the city, shake some hands, have a few drinks and go back home when the tour leaves.

The biggest local show here is 1970 and older and they still pull in around 3,000 cars. I couldn't get in with the Barracuda since it was a '73. If you've got a small show I guess it makes sense to expand the audience. I do like seeing new cars as long as they aren't stock (or at least if they're rare!) - but that's what cruise-ins are for. These big, national shows just get too big unless they're well organized (and all the new cars are parked by class somewhere that I can avoid). I get a little sad when I take my Mach 1 to a Ford show and there's only 3 others in the 69-70 class while 60-70% of the participants have car less than 10 years old. The biggest drawback is that parts vendors will bring parts for the audience (ie only newer stuff) so it's a double whammy if you've got an old one.

At Carlisle, the large majority of new cars aren't "show" cars - just transportation. It's cheaper to register a car (or tow vehicle) than to pay for parking and admission for two people for the weekend. Mopar Nationals registration is much more expensive so it isn't as obvious.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

IMHO, another aspect is guys I know that don't go anywhere. For example, I got a buddy w 2 really nice RR's they rarely leave the garage, and when they do they rarely go far...  And he's not the only one. Of course its YOUR car do what you want. But, I drive my stuff and got the niks and scrats to prove it! I guess they got to fill shoes somehow. @ Carlise a buddy of mine was there with his rusty Ram1500. Why?? Close parking!

You may not know this, but when Chip and Bill Miller founded Carlisle Events nearly 40 years ago, is was due to Hershey not allowing "newer" cars. So that has been the idea, to show what you have, always.

That's cool, be free to show the car you have!  Unfortunately that worked 40 years ago when new cars were overall much better looking.  Today, not so much.

I'm not a fan of the modern stuff at all. I call it the die cast effect. remember when die cast cars were collectable not jammed down our throats and TOLD they're collectable? Same thing!

everyone with a Corvette, Challenger, Charger, Camaro, Mustang still covered under warranty you should park with the Hyundai's, Honda's Prius's, and Whatnot's!  :shruggy:

It would be a monumental financial disaster if Carlisle didn't allow newer cars into the fairgrounds. Yes many pay just to park in the field, and yes they are easily avoidable if you choose not to look at them. If you think the Mopar show has alot of newer cars, check out the Ford show. There's 80's and up Mustangs out the kazoo. I was told by Don, that Moparfest in Canada has a limited restriction on how many newer cars are allowed in. Moparfest is simply out of space, or I am sure they wouldn't mind the entrance fees. If Carlisle does run out of room, then something would have to give.

Does it bother me to go to a local show only to see a car driven off the lot win? Yup

NJRBros

Honestly I think as long as they're not competing for space at a car show, new cars shouldn't make any difference.. Not bringing your classic just because there's a bunch of modern cars is just silly and it's completely defeating your own purpose.. and saying it ruins the show is just as silly. There are plenty of older cars there to look at without going near any new ones.. if everyone had that mindset Carlisle would be empty next year. If the newer generation is what appeals to some people than so be it!

Anyway the point of this rant is that I think everyone should be allowed to bring what they personally like to car shows.  Even if it just rolled off the assembly line. :yesnod:

So then is Carlisle worth going to?   It's always the same weekend as the Arthritis Car Show and Goodguys in  Columbus, so I haven't been there yet.

What I hate about car shows these days is looking at the engine bays of 500 cars and seeing the exact same thing under each hood. A lot of people are too concerned in duplicating the factory look for some reason and less interested in custom and performance work. Is there really that much difference in looking at old cars that look exactly as they left the factory versus new cars that are exactly the same as they left the factory? I have a lot of people ask me why I don't take my Challenger to shows? I think it's kind of cool to contrast the old with the new.

I enjoyed the pictures. :)

Also, this might be because I'm young, and have a neon srt-4 myself... but I enjoy at least that aspect of the newer cars. My boyfriend and I spent a lot of time looking at the neons and srt-4's. I don't mind seeing some new cars, but I don't want them to completely overwhelm the older generation, they are prettier after all. ;) I certainly don't mind them being there though.

If I wanted to see ram trucks and new chargers/ challengers I would just check out a K-Mart parking lot...   :Twocents:
