German/Israeli K98 Mauser

For those that don't know, after WWII the Allies disarmed Germany. Most of the guns (ones that weren't captured DURING the war) were taken and distributed around the world. Most of the K98 Mausers ended up in Israel. Almost all of these were converted to 7.62x51mm (aka .308) since that is what the US could provide.

So I took the K98 out and decided to put it through it's paces. When I  got out there though I foolishly remembered that I had forgot to clean the  rifle. Either way I loaded 5 rounds of Federal Fusion 165gr into the K98  and took aim at 50 yards. Just high. Next round dead center. Next  target was 200 yards out. Shots were grouping within 2 to 3 inches but that is leaning on a vehicle so I'm sure that the rifle can perform than my meager shooting can do. Very impressed. The only problem was opening the bolt to extract the round was pretty tough and flung the shell casings up to 10 feet. I think with a good cleaning and a good lubing  she will be a really good rifle.

Oh and leaving it out in the hot sun some of the oil from the stock started seeking out. But that was no big problem.

Thinking of turning it into a German Sniper Rifle clone due to how well it's shooting.

Nice shooting, Drache and a good cleaning of the old "98" would be in order. Aside from a good cleaning of the metal parts and sweating out the old cosmoline and oil from the stock, I would just put a couple of coats of Birchwood Casey Stock Oil on the wood and call it even! Of course, that would also include a good cleaning and lubrication of all the metal! Enjoy it as it is and no messing with the configuration needed.!  :2thumbs:

You can also use a hair dryer on a medium setting to help extract the cosmoline. But be prepared to re oil once it's dried out.

Pretty clean old K98! That's one that is missing in my collection!

7.62x54 is a Russian round used in Mosin Nagants, SVT-40s etc.

Nice K98. I recently sold my force matched Russian Captured '39 k98. It wasn't rechambered though. All Nazi markings were still present too.

a 7.62 NATO K-98??? never knew they existed...Now I want one!

Always like the K98 but didn't want to add another caliber of ammo to my collection (30.06/.308/5.56) so I'm gonna start looking!

Thanks!

I've also reached the max of calibres I'm willing to buy and/or load for. .22LR, .204 Ruger, .270 Win, 7mm Rem Mag, 7.62x25, 7.62x39, 7.62x54, .303 British, 9x19, and the 12 gauge. Still have room for a .338 Lapua (maybe an Ackley Improved) or a 50 BMG. The .408 Cheytac is now off the list. Every once in a while I wanna add a 5.56, Swiss Arms, but the thought of having to buy crates and crates of 5.56 surplus to feed it kills that idea. I'll just stick to 7.62x39.

Oh well

Interesting about that Mk 2 above, hard to believe that were still making Bolt action battle rifles in the mid 50's!

Does anyone else find it ironic that Nazi rifles used to persecute Jews later helped them gain freedom and protect themselves? I think it's great. Would like to have a WWII K98.

They also used German BF-109's at the beginning of the war for independence. Was interesting that BF-109's (Israel) and Spitfires (Egypt) were again battling it out in 1948
