Does your 69 Charger have the long guards on the front or the short ones.  If you have the long ones, what was your build date?

charge69

Well, I put this info on the "diecast" thread but ......... Yes, I have the tall bumper guards with a spd date on my Charger of 314.

P.S.  It's a Hamtramck build. 4/17/13 I found and added a couple of pics showing the tall bumper guards installed.

DISCLAIMER!  I know the bumper was off before I got it (regular bolts holding the guards to the front valence) so it could have been changed?,

I would say this is true for all these cars.  Unless the original owner can tell you what happened you can just as well assume that the guards had a mishap and were changed by the dealer within a year.  You just never know.  A lot can happen in 40+ years.

I looked back at the pics of when I was taking it apart and I'm thinking the guards are original.  It looks like they did some work on the front valence (it looks like it was straightened in the back near the core support).  The bolts holding the guards to the valence were cheap 1/4 or 5/16 hardware store versions with flat washers on both sides, so I'm guessing whoever tore it apart, lot the bolts and used whatever to get it back together.  The bumper hardware was all stock, and the chrome on the guards and both bumpers all looked about the same (like it was all weathered the same).
I bought the car from an individual, but he had gotten it out of a junkyard down in Cooter's neck of the woods so no help from the P.O.

Ghoste

The not knowing for certain whats original applies to lot of things on these cars but maybe we can at least form some generalizations on some stuff.

Dino

I should remove one of mine and see what mark it left in the bumper.  That should make it a bit easier for others to compare to their bumper and see if it matches or not.

Okay, I'm going to see if I have any earlier versions because I think I might.  See if it helps arrow it down a bit when they appeared in the book.

myk

Wow.  Just when I thought I knew everything about 2nd Gens this comes up.  Why would they have two different styles of bumper guards?  I THINK I have the short ones...

bakerhillpins

I think the SPD date is Apr 4 of 69. You have my cars tag/sheet in the registry stuff... I have the tall ones.

wonder if both assembly plants , started fitting tall guards at the same time , of when their excising stock was depleted

I wonder that too because I had an April build 69 with short guards on it.

Yep,   mine is a "B", or Hamtramck build scheduled on 314, or 11 days before that one was built! The tall bumper guards are on mine also.

Here is a picture back in 2008 during the initial teardown of my Charger.

I believe my 69 charger was built on June 3 and has the long bumper guards.  AMD has the short ones available (which look better to me) but not the long ones.

What do most folks think as far as which looks best?  Long or Short?
