Changing water pump temp sensor

Hello all,

I am about to replace the temp sensor on my water pump. Since the exact year of the pump is unknown, I thought I would remove the current one and use that to compare. It could be anywhere from a 68 thru 71 pump for a 440 Magnum.

When I removed it, coolant started to come out, so I immediately put it back in.

Do I need to remove all the coolant before doing this swap, or will just 'an amount' of coolant come out that I can replace?

if you are quick, have the new sender standing by, remove old sender, and quickly install new sender with minimal loss of coolant. What little you spill can be washed away easy. Also, do this with engine cold and rad cap still on & tight

the senders were the same for all years here, until you get in to the 80's cars

Thanks for that. My wife says I'm quick, so I should have no trouble here.

That's what I did I prepped with Teflon, removed old, install new, and minimal loss.

Lol, just changed one on a ford truck with a 302 and I thought after 40 mins of sitting after I had been driving it that it would be cool enough to swap without so much pressure on it. Boy was I wrong, I got it out to the last thread an coolant was already seeping out when all the sudden poof it sorayed my left hand like old faithful!!! I have been working on cars/trucks for 17 plus years and this was the first time I have been scolded with antifreeze. If I can give any advise be sure the pressure is off the cooling system before you do anything to it!! I sit here rubbing butter on my hand for an hour trying to get it to quit stinging. The first night was the roughest and the next night was a lot better. What a dumb a$$ huh. I just took it for granted it was cool enough to swap it out but I won't let that happen again!!!!

stick yer hand in a bowl of flour and let it sit there for 15 minutes

Haven't heard of that remedy yet but I will remember that!!! :yesnod: Most of the skin on top of my fingers has peeled off now and looks awful but it doesn't hurt like that first night after I got burned!! :-\

from what I heard, if you would have put yer hand in the flour right away, peeling would not have happened
