Hi,

I posted a thread the other day regarding the differential not fitting in my 741 Case, it turns out now that the differential will fit, but I need a different installation kit for the axle. The following is the current one that I have:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/RAT-351K

My mechanic said the following: "Bearings do not fit on the spool, the inner diameter of the spool is too large"

The question is then which installation kit will work.

Again, the differential is the following: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DTL-913A572
Ring&Pinion is the following: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MGR-C887355M

According to him there is a number of different installation kits that could possibly fit (see the attached image).

If one of the experts on here could help steer us in the right direction, I really would appreciate it!

Thanks & Regards from Munich

Charlie

Hey Ron,

thanks for the info, but that's the one that I already have... I really don't understand then why it wouldn't fit...??? Obviously, I'm not the mechanic here, he just told me what I mentioned above..

That seems odd. That is the correct kit for a 741 centersection....i suppose the kit could have been mislabeled or the wrong carrier bearings were packed ??

Cass aka Dr Diff is excellent to deal with....i've purchased lots from him  :2thumbs:

Ok, this had me curious so i decided to investigate  :scope: Looking at the carrier bearing options for an 8.75 centersection it appears that the type of carrier used determines the correct bearing diameter. I'm familiar with the powerlock SG units which came stock in these cars. Charlie is using an aftermarket Eaton SG unit and it appears the bearing diameter is different than what would be used in a factory powerlock. This is something i wasn't aware of....learn something new every day !  :yesnod:

Here is a quote from Dr Diffs website :

Powr-lok" (clutch-type) sure-grip or pre 1969 open differentials use 1.8" inside diameter carrier bearings.  Spools, Auburn cone sure-grip, Eaton True-Trac, Detroit Locker or post 1968 open differentials use 2" inside diameter carrier bearings.

IF YOU ARE UNSURE WHICH DIFFERENTIAL YOU HAVE, PLEASE MEASURE THE BEARING JOURNAL DIAMETER."

So, it would appear that you have a set of carrier bearings and installation kit for a stock style powerlock and need the correct bearings for the aftermarket Eaton tru-trac  :yesnod:
