What would a 383 be worth

I was wondering how much a 383 would be worth if it was running when taken out and is complete from oil pan to intake and is date coded 1968 with 440 heads on it

1969 Dodge Charger 383

Almost nothing. Sadly, most people opt for the 440 if swapping to a big block. If they've got a tired/dead 383 already it's stupid easy to put in a 440 and it costs the same to build. I have a couple running 383s laying around. I got one free and paid $200 for the other. If you are on one of the coasts the prices may be higher. I wish I had something to put one in but I also have several 440s so I don't see it happening.

In 68 all big blocks got the same heads. Should be 906 or 213 casting.

The thing is there is no big blocks around here you can't find any if a guy wants to buy it from me would it be worth 500

Ask 500 and take what they come back with. :shruggy:
I like 383s they are a fine engine. Someone on a budget will make out well because the value is low.
Put your self in the buyers seat. They say it is good--you have faith--you install it and find trouble. How much is the investment so far?
If you have to pull it back out the losses start to mount and you are back at the beginning.

I do too.  I have had several, and they all ran great.

Robert, I think shipping would kill any deal we could make but if you still have it PM me. I all so like 383's. But, if you got to build a BB, 413 or bigger!  :2thumbs:

My 68 ran great with the 383, absolutely no complaints.  Sadly not worth the scrap metal though.

Wow, never knew 383s are so worth less than a 440. I know a guy in Phoenix trying to sell his for 3k claims built up and everything.

If it's been used then it's a used engine. Without documentation, invoices for parts/labor, and/or a thorough inspection no one really wants to pay (a lot) for someone else's completed motor. As mentioned, it costs just as much to build a 383 as a 440 but it's a very hard sell for one that you just dumped a bunch of money in. The guy I bought my bronze Charger from had a brand spanking new refreshed 383 he wanted to sell with the car. I passed. He wanted almost as much for the engine as I paid for the car and it was "only a 383". The best bang-for-the-buck out there is a good running used/original 383 because you can get them dirt cheap and they run great! There are lots of stroker kits and such if you ever feel like bumping up the power but, again, going all out on a 383 seems pointless when you could just start with a 440 block instead. ***Especially if you ever plan to sell the car!*** Yes, there are advantages to the 383 (revs higher, stronger side walls, shorter deck height, etc.) but nearly everyone out there wants a 440.

Troy

383 engines are tough and strong...They weigh less too.  revs higher, stronger side walls, shorter deck height..:yesnod:

mauve66

the cubes i want will make the piston too short and that puts the rings in the oil hole
the 440's i've ridden in made enough torque to outweigh the slight rev/weight advantage, plus i've never had one sooooo

cudaken, i went ahead and sold the intake/carb, and now  i'm gonna keep the M/T valve covers that were on it.
i was just trying to cover the core charge i would have when i do get my motor (even though its a 383 and i would order a 440, it should cover some of the bill).  shipping wouldn't make it worth your while although i do appreciate the thought, i'll just keep it sitting in the corner for now.  with everything that's gone wrong the past 7 months Mary will never see the road again.
Sorry for the un-fulfilled promise Steve. :'(

You got one w/1970 date code? I know someone looking.....

Nice to know if I blow my 383 it shouldn't cost that much to replace it rather than rebuild it though I'd have to give up the matching #'s.

old thread i know but i sold a 383 today for $150. I had it listed for 6 months and just now sold it to a guy for his A-body build.  1968 906 heads and factory intake, it was a high mileage "core" engine.

Mauve, I'll give you 300 for that 383 that you have laying around.

The problem with the 383 is it has less stroke than a small block Chevy. Too much weight for small displacement when compared to the 440.
I like a 383, but given the choice, I wouldn't give more than $50.00 for one...no way  gonna get $500.00 when I can't even get that for my RUNNING 440. Sorry.

I paid 150 for one 30 years ago, it was totally built on the inside and ran just as well as the stock 440 magnum's i had before and after the 383, but it would nose over power wise around 120mph where the 440 kept going.  I would think there would be alot of roadrunner or superbee folks that would like the 383.

440 stroker's will make more torque compared to a 383 stroker....but there's nothing wrong with having a good running, stock appearing 383 ...that's built right! :icon_smile_wink:

I'm trading mine (running) for a non-running 440 core.
