Today was not a good day....woke up this morning, took Cappy (our dog) out for his morning potty walk...then when we got back, I mulled around the house trying to decide what I was gonna try and accomplish today. Figured I would check my emails before I started anything outside....went to my mail, couple of junk emails, like always...but there were 3 emails from Paypal saying "receipt for debit card purchase".....I thought, HUH?? I have not used my card since July 4th at Home Depot when I went to purchase 2 water hose timers for $34.00 (ouch)

To continue, I opened the emails out of curiosity, one said card verification in the amount of $1.00 from AOL, second said that my Paypal Debit MasterCard Business transaction did not go through, amount of $739.58.... Strange, I don't have a "business card". Last one said "here is receipt for your debit card purchase, amount of $790.09"

I went to my Paypal account, yup, they got $800 from me at 4:00am this morning while I was sleeping...place that got it was CAIRO, Egypt. Cleaned me out damn near.

I really didn't need this crap right now...most here know of my problems I'm having with no income & health, but that's another story...this money we needed. I was on the phone immediately with Paypal asking about this...spent over an hour on the phone, my ear still hurts, got the wheels of progress turning, case number filed, and Paypal says I should & will get my money back in a week or maybe less. Paypal cancelled my debit card, which is how the scammers did it, and are issuing me a new one, should be here in a couple days. I did not loose my original card, it's still here with me, and I have the only one.

So be aware people, I have taken great measures to keep myself private & out of the visible public, but it can happen to anyone. Check your accounts if you have them, if you are in doubt, call them

I had a similar type thing with Ebay and they covered it.   I had to fill out some paperwork and some BS stuff, but they came good on it.  They have insurance!

I listened to a radio show about this very sort of thing a few nights ago. Apparently it is widespread, practically impossible to stop, and sooooo much money is being made on internet sales that it only qualifies as a nuisance and is pretty much looked upon as a cost of doing business on the net.

I haven't used my Paypal account in over a year as in having money in it. I pretty much only use it with my credit cards now.

Bryan some time back my bank contacted me inquiring had I been to or bought from Spain? Same thing, some dirt bag tried to buy a bunch of high end stereo stuff. I was lucky the bank caught it, froze the transaction and the card. Hackers suck!  :flame:

Double check your account and also your email accounts and be sure someone hasnt added an additional email address for notifications. I had Paypal contact me a few years back and asked if I had bought 4 sets of headphones going to Vietnam. Turned out someone had hacked my email account, added their email address to the account. Paypal and ebay stopped the sales and I got my money back in just a couple days.

I also removed the guys email address, then emailed him with a not so nice message... not that it would do any good but it did teach me the importance of a strong password.

I hope you got into your Paypal and made changes right after you noticed it This happened to a place I work at part time. They got hit twice. PayPal made it right with them in a day or 2.

I also had my email account hacked recently. The guy was trying to redirect my purchases to his address in Arizona. I'd have never noticed until one of his emails got a reply. He was a little sloppy as he also never deleted the emails from my sent folder. But, now I'm paranoid.

Like many others, happened to me a few months back as well.  It's bound to happen, but like I tell everyone else, don't fear the technology.  Rather, what I did is went to my bank and they sell these refillable credit cards, cost me just a few bucks.  However, whenever I want to make a actual purchase myself I move the money over to that card.  Then I submit the transaction and that card is then brought down to about zero.  Yeah, someone could gain access to my PayPal still but they will NOT have access to my debit card / bank account.  They might be able to purchase a value meal at some fast food joint but that will be the extent of my loss and exposure.

Bit of good news tonight...I just checked my Paypal account, all my money has been put back in...I can breathe a bit easier now. I think when I get my new debit card, I'm gonna go to my bank and withdraw all but maybe $150 or so.

Thanks to everyone for the replies

Thats great news. I only have my checking account and a credit card linked to Paypal. In fact I never used my debit card to order anything online.
