Cut a hole in a tennis ball and slide it over the latch while you are working on it.

My head is so scabbed over and calloused........I don't even feel it any more.  I come inside and the wife says........"you're bleeding again"........that's the first I know of it.

i've never dealt with a charger hood latch, but if its anything like that stupid grille divider on 69-72 oldsmobiles... i'll be too short to hit my head on it
