I've worked with cattle long enough to see that a lot of people are really no smarter. A herd of cattle and a herd of people have a lot of similarities in behavior. It's quite fascinating.

I've actually thought the similarity was more in line between people and sheep. One sheep will walk over a bank and the rest will follow. I think a lot of people are like that.

The farmer is reliable for the damage.  He had his cows out.  At least that is how it would be handled where I'm at.  For some reason, this doesn't apply to deer, but you have to pay to kill them.  Go figure.

The farmer may or may not be liable for the damage. Texas is a free range state (or was, might have changed by now), which means even if the cows are out and you hit one with your car, You pay the farmer for his cow.
