Question about "fleet wiring"

Is this done by simply shorting the "P" wire to the "J" wire, bypassing the bulkhead connector in the process? If so, and if you don't care about having the ammeter hooked up, can you simply cut the "P" and "J" wires on the engine compartment side of the firewall and short them together right there, thus eliminating the need to go through the firewall at all?

Hi,

In its original form the 60 amp "fleet bypass" shown in my 71 FSM ran new wiring through a firewall grommet which bypassed the bulkhead connector. The fusible link was now a 14 gauge section to a 10 gauge red wire through the firewall grommet to the ammeter. An 8 gauge black wire ran from the other side of the ammeter through the firewall grommet to the alternator. The original 12 gauge wires are shown in the FSM as being cut off and taped at the bulkhead connector. The black wire from the ammeter stud itself  to the splice weld is still in place to power the car. If you simply connect the alternator output to the battery stud on the starter relay you still need to get power to the splice weld point inside the car.
