I recently replaced one in my 69 charger. With the tank in the car it is a bit of a struggle. Without the right tool I used a long (18" or so) rod 3/8-dia aprox. The important thing is tapping the tang on the nut at the best possible angle to unscrew it. The long rod gives you room to use the hammer.

Heck, I just used a flat head screw driver with a hammer to knock the ring around and get it out.

Um, yeah, been using a flat blade screw driver ever since I was 15 Y/O to remove them. Hmmm, there's a tool?

yeah a special tool to remove its a lock and key type used to remove them i didnt know either until some older gentleman i was talking to told me.  then i looked it up and damn wow...its there.

I would recommend the tool. Makes it so much easier (tried with a rod and hammer before) to turn the lock ring. also installation of the sending unit with a new gasket is a breeze.
tool is only about 10 bucks or so.

I never knew about the tool either, always did it the same way as Cooter.

I didn't like the idea of using a hammer and screwdriver so I made my own tool. Works like a charm..........

I like that :2thumbs: You are a fabricator. Sometimes I will make tools for a simple job that I may never need again. But enjoy answering the problem.
Huston we have a problem. Well--- fix it.

I'm definitely not just a pretty face.  :icon_smile_big:   Actually I make a lot of my own tools. Sometimes because the tool I need doesn't exist, sometimes because it costs way too much for something I'll probably ever only use once. But having the right tool even if it's only needed one time sure makes the job a lot easier.
