im taken off the paint in my engine bay with a poly carbine abrasive wheel on my angle grinder.it is leaving a smooth surface but should i go over it with a sander before primer goes on? and if so what grit paper.

I would guess that the wheel will leave some "tooth" on the metal so primer should go on ok.  Wheel does not leave a "shine".. right??  You really can't tell by feel so as long as the metal is not shiny like chrome it should be ok.  If you worry about it just go over it with a sanding disc.

Something like 200 grit should be fine.

Frogman, how soon are you going to paint it?

Here is how I do mine.

1 I strip the compartment with a DA (OK yours is done) and I start with around 120 grit. Then I uses 220 to get rid of the 220 marks. Any paint that is left, I hand sand with 220. Then I repeat with 320.

All so make sure you keep your hands clean!  :2thumbs:

I all so primer and block any body work just like the outside of the car. In this case, there was no bodywork needed.

Now, here is where some of the folks will tell you I am wrong, but is works for me! I do not primer clean bare metal before paint! I take it bare metal and all into the booth, then I seal it with a none sand-able primer / sealer. I think on this Charger I used American Finishes AP 440. (got to love the 440 part ) I will all so have to check to see if that is the correct part number!

I let the Sealer flash for 10 minutes then shoot my base and clear over it. I personally like a paint brand called ICI, it is great for spot painting as well.

Here is what it looked like when done.

Main thing is to make sure there is nothing you can feel and there are very few marks showing before you paint!

As far as holding up? It is my 68 Road Runner, I painted the bay 30 years ago doing it as I posted about but with single stage.

I sure cannot complain, she sat out side for 8 years waiting for me to love her again!
