Couple new scams

Don't know if everyone else is aware of these, so I thought I'd pass them along.

This first one is about jury duty:

Pass this on to your grown children and anyone else you can think of. This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your e-mail address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury duty coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the Scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado, AZ, OR and more. This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system.

The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Check it out here:

Yep! It's true

And the 2nd one is about your telephone

90# on your telephone

I dialed '0' to check this out, and the operator confirmed that this was correct,   so please pass it on.. (l also checked out snopes.com  and truthorfiction.comThis is true, and also applies   to cell phones!)

PASS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW

I received a telephone call last evening from an individual identifying   himself as an AT&T Service Technician (could also be Telus) who was   conducting a test on the telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test   I should touch nine (9), zero (0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up.   Luckily, I was suspicious and refused.

Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#,   you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which   enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number.   I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many local   jails/prisons. DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE...

The GTE Security Department requested that I share this information with  EVERYONE I KNOW.

After checking with Verizon they also said it was true, so do not dial 90# for anyone !!!!!

Thanks for posting.

My daughters email was hacked......no real damage, but a PIA, so we pay more attention now.

Passed on.

After I posted this, I got hit by a scammer that blocked my net disguised as the Department of Justice and requested $400 to be paid in 72 hours or I'd get turned into the FBI.  It wiped out all of my cookies and turned on the camera on my computer that now has a piece of a tape over it.

Wow......never ends, does it? :flame:

I think we have all heard more then once to NEVER give out info to someone who calls you......but it must still work, or scammers would not be doing it.

As course sometime our ever efficient government  :icon_smile_big: helps confuse things......

A couple of mouths ago, I received a legitimate questionnaire for possible jury duty addressed to my oldest daughter.....even though she has not lived at my address for over 9 years and has been out of state for 7.

Seems like someone would have figured that out before now. :scratchchin:

I am consistently surprised that so many people chose scamming as a job. They are generally pretty smart and can make a great living with their talent. But the important reality is they don't have ethics. They can rip the lifes earnings out from under anyone that will fall for their scam. We as a whole tend to take someone at their word until they prove it to be a mistake. So the scammers are teaching us to not believe anyone. As we learn that their job gets harder but new unscammed folks are following us. We are at fault for falling for scams and the scammers should pay taxes just like drug dealers and the rest of the underworld.
