I had one more row to put in the garden today before tonights rain comes in and near the end of the garden I came across these tracks. Waayyy too big to be a dog...

Here it is next to my size 12 boots.

One more.

They are strange in that there are always two tracks side by side. At first I thought it might be a black bear but the pics I find on the net do not match. Bobcat maybe?

YUP  Cougar tracks!  :o

Wow, big prints and depth of compression would suggest its fairly large too!
Maybe time for an infrared motion activated camera.

I guess Cougars are protected by law out where you are Tilar? Any of you're neighbors seen or heard anything with their stock missing?
Old Dog, Old Tricks.

the weeds have stood back up so you weren't right behind him ,big animal but.worst we have to worry about here is croc's, dingo's and feral pigs .
how close to the house is the garden? any kids/domestic pets? I'd be worried about a big ass  cat prowling around my back yard

This house is in town, Not at the farm. The garden is probably 50 feet from the house. There are kids in the area and people all around have pets. One neighbor said she heard what sounded like a high pitch screaming early this morning, but I didn't hear it. Nobody missing as far as I know though.   :popcrn:

I've thought about getting one of those cameras, might be time to do more than think about it. And I don't care if they are protected or not, if I catch it in the yard it's gonna end up dog food.

Yeah Mark, she would make a great pet, but I don't think she would leave that deep of a paw print.  :scope:

I would say it's a wolf, way before any cougar track, a cougar or a bobcat track will have a big pad marking & wont show claws, they're retracted when they are walking or out when they want to attack something, just like a common housecat... were do you live that may help narrow it down some ?? my buddies Dogs Newfoundland & St. Bernard have feet easily that big or bigger, wolves have huge feet too....

I've seen both in my back woods in years past, neither one is something to mess around with... Call the Dept. of Fish & Game....

That is a canine track, I've tracked enough of them through the years for the bounty money. Either a large dog or wolf.

Those look like a double print too, they are known to put their back feet in the same tracks as their front feet when stalking pray, less scent & noise... I showed them to my neighbor, he's a Calif. Fish & Game Warden, he says probably a wolf or big dog too....

Dad and I were out hunting and walking down an old logging road. We got to the end and decided to turn back. Found these tracks over top of ours.

There are definitely wolves and coyotes both around here. I have them around the farm which is only 3 miles away but I've never seen them in town. The neighbor guy came over and he said it was some kind of dog tracks... Looks like a damn big dog to me. Your measurements up there are not far off. The pic where I have my shoe next to it, that track measures 4" wide and 5" long.

We have a "exotic feline rescue center" about 15 miles from my house and they have em' all Lions, Panthers, Cougars, Bobcats, Tigers. Anyway a few years ago people around the area started talking that they had seen a "cougar" in their yard or crossing the road. The rescue center would never admit that any ever escaped but 2 years ago during deer season a bow hunter in a tree stand (teacher at the high school) took a pic with his cell phone of a friggin' cougar below his tree stand  :o I would have shot it. But from what I have been told there are more "mountain lions" migrating north into our area anyway. idk but I sure would not want a encounter with anything like that.
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

Tilar

The Game Warden just left and he said it was a Coon Dog. I used to coon hunt when I was younger and never have I seen a dog leave tracks that big, but he swears that's what it is.

The mountain lions are starting to come into Kansas here. Some of my railroad workers saw one in town by our tracks just a few weeks ago in the morning.  My grandma lives in Des Moines and lives in the middle of town. She was about to go for her morning walk with her little dog and the dog flipped out and would not go outside. She had never seen the dog act that way. She decided to stay home and not go for her walk with the dog. A few minutes later a half a block away by the grade school the cops were everywhere and they had shot a mountain lion.

I would keep an eye on things. Theres been many sitings in Kansas here and the Fish & Game says no that's not correct and then a few weeks later someone gets a picture of something big and nasty to prove them wrong.

That has already crossed my mind... I'm seriously considering one of those infrared wildlife cameras like Bob T suggested. They are not that expensive.
