Tuning question for the modern Edelbrock Carter AVS guys.

Hey Guys,

A few years ago, I built the 440 in my Charger and dyno tuned a new 800 CFM Edelbrock AVS for the car using a strip kit. That Engine was a 9.5:1 compression engine (maybe) and had a small Hughes cam. I have since rebuilt the engine and it's now a 11.5:1 compression engine, slightly worked iron heads (bigger exhaust valve), iron intake and stock exhaust manifolds with a Mr. Sixpack cheater cam. Car is a 4-spd, 3.54 gear.

The carb is still set for the old 9.5 440, and I'm wondering if any carb guys could give me an idea of what the jets and rods should be for the present build? Dyno tuning is probably out of the question for awhile, but I'd like to get the carb closer to what the engine can use as is. Edelbrock told me the stock carbs come with 113 primary jets and 107 secondary's with .068x.047 jets. I was thinking of putting it back to stock, but thought  I'd check with you guys to get your input.

It does have hot start issues, and I know that can be fuel related. I do mix race gas with it and it's set at 36 degrees total timing. It has a factory spacer under the carb.

Thanks !
Randy

69wannabe

I hate to say but when tuning a carb its a lot of drive and test and drive some more. I had the smaller 650 avs version on a 383 I had in my charger. It was a good carb but it wasn't the best choice by far. Built a 440 and I knew the 650 would never be enough carb so bought a used 750 double pumper holley from a friend of mine and that's the best move I have ever made. The holley double pump carbs are good carbs and the proforms are good carbs too. My buddy has a 750 vacumm secondary carb on his 440 that runs great too. I have had some good luck with them edelbrock carbs and have had some bad luck with them too. Good luck!!  Oh and put you a heat insulator spacer under that carb or a plastic spacer if your hood will still close without hitting the breather.

yep , need to drive , & see what it feels like  ,
does it give any indication  ,    hesatation  ,   running lean , black smoke when nailing the gas ,  too rich an idle ,

check plugs under diffirent load conditions as soon as possible , we all know the one about on the drag strip , directaly after a a run or continious WOT ,   shut motor off  with out letting it idle check plugs  , air fuel ratio gauge will be a big help , still need to check plugs though  , going on a chassis  dyno is better still ,
if you can get on a chassis dyno , will save hours & hours of time & gas  :yesnod:
