999 Paint code Aero, and other, Mopars - input and data sought.

Greetings All,

The Petty Blue Superbird discussions have brought me additional questions about other Petty Blue cars and 999 paint code vehicles in general.  I would like to ask if there is any interest in documenting examples of 999 Mopars (Aero or not).  I am not sure where to put this post because if spans all models and began here.

Are there well documented examples of 999 paint code Charger 500s and Daytonas?

Also, Hugh Clark contacted me asking about the 66 Belvedere recently in MCG that his brother bought new with special ordered Petty/Corporate Blue paint.  Has anyone heard of an earlier car in this color?

How long was 999 used as a reference to non-standard paints?  I have seen reference to a 1965 RO car.  Did 999 continue on into the 70s?

Another enthusiast, Daniel Miller, has asked me about the 68 Petty Blue Road Runners of which 10 were supposed to be built.  Is there anyone else out there with knowledge of these cars?

999 ran from the start of the 1970 model year into at least the 1974 model year.

Occasionally other codes were used as well, A15 comes to mind, 98E, etc........

Saw a 999 code on a 73 fury 6 pass wagon today at an estate auction.  It was bright grass green with a white painted top.  It was originally a game and parks state owned vehicle.  Also had a Y39 code.

The government vehicle makes perfect sense.  I would not be surprised if the Dodge military trucks and cars had a 99 or 999 code.

63 = ?
64= 99
65, 66 = 999
67 = ?
68 = 999
69 = 99
70-76 = 999 but you start to see three digit or digit and letter paint codes starting to show up on '76 cop cars.

I'm not sure about 77 and later. You see a lot of three digit paint codes (005, 014, 015, 246, etc) on cop cars instead of 999 like earlier years.

I too have a early Petty Blue car. It is a '68 roadrunner 383 4speed post car. Many myths are circulating about these cars. I would like to hear from anyone owning one or knows about them. Mine sat for some years and shows it but they are a rarity for sure.

That auction is from a previous owner (2 owners back). The new owner (doctor dodge) is John in Canada.

I've spoken with him, and two former owners (Les and Andy). Everyone who has a 999 Road Runner (me too) are always hoping for some documentable history on these rarities.

I know of 5 existing 1968 Petty Blue (999) Road Runners, 4 are from St. Louis and one from LA. I have talked with two other owners, I own one, and have credible evidence on two cars (but not the owners or location).

Anyone out there know anyone?

I had this Oct car craft mag mentioned .It had a 68 RR with superbird type plymouths 1/4 decals a unusual trunk spoiler.It might had more detail on 68 petty road runners

Petty Blue 68 Road Runner looking like a race car. This was the brainchild of the Chrysler ad agency, Young & Rubicam, and was thought to be marketed in 1969 as a "Petty Special". Petty Blue, huge "Plymouth" logos on the quarters like Superbirds would later have, Hemi, 4-sp, black interior and black steel wheels etc etc. Unfortunately Petty went to Ford in '69 and the project was scrapped. Before this book I had only heard the car mentioned one time before, in a 3 page article in the October 1985 issue of Car Craft magazine. Needless to say, it made an impression...

That claim of 75 was made up by the seller Andy in Miami, who bought the car to flip in 2012.

The next previous owner Les, and I, worked on building data and history, including contact with Petty Enterprises and Govier. We didn't hardly get any help. But we are reasonable certain of the figure 10 built. Andy said he just made up the 75 because it sounded good for the ad.

Oh yes, drmopar. Interesting discussion back two years ago at FBBO (April 2011). He was selling a 1 of 1 Road Runner.

It's a '70 RR with a 999 fender tag. He absolutely insisted it was Petty Blue originally (now Sublime Green). Most everyone accepted it as so. He was rather pissed when a couple folks seriously questioned it, but it was mostly and reasonable accepted as a 1 of 1 Petty Blue. I thought he had a solid case based on the build sheets, strong data from the Winged Warriors site and Brennan Cook's site, and his statements that he saw blue in hidden locations. No pictures were ever posted though.

Problem is that he put up the very same car up for sale again in July 2011 and declared it to be an original 999 factory code that was Platinum Silver. He presents it now as a 999 silver car, re-painted Sublime. Not Petty Blue and repainted.

Very big problem to have the car go from Petty Blue to Platinum Silver in 3 months.

It looked to be a great car, no matter the original color. He wanted $59k. I don't know if it ever sold. He was active with listing numerous Road Runners for sale thru summer of 2012, then no more posts.

He never pursued the 999 matter at FBBO. Would seem that he was color blind, AND couldn't find a camera to use. The story changing destroyed any credibility. So the car isn't a Petty Blue RR.

That's very possible. A4 was not carried over as a color for 1970 B bodies. I have seen a STL built 70 GTX that codes 999 (meaning "color not available as a standard color") but was documented as A4. I did not see the GTX BS to see what the color code was.

Either way, the car in question IS a cool and desirable car.  It would be nice to know the original color. Confusion over 99/999 paint codes is common.

Roger Gibson restored a Daytona for Tim Wellborn with a 99 paint code. It was what Roger called "Race Hemi Orange" which I believe was the same as Omaha Orange.
