Came across this in Hotrodding (June 1983). I wish I could find another swap from the past that was 426hemi in a C300 Mercedes. It was in the seventies? We just can't keep our hands off of a fine running car.

Having driven Cobras, I can't imagine how squirrely one would get with a Hemi and some more weight out front.  The 427 cars are nasty enough without getting even  more unbalanced.

I haven't had the pleasure of driving one but remember a drive test by a comedian back then. He drove it across country and reported the odd problem of going sideways at eighty mph whenever he stepped on the gas. A fun car is different than a practical car.

Ghoste

Oh yeah, a real easy car to put sideways.

surmanajaja

there was a replica with if i remember right,a kb hemi and a blower in hot rod long time ago,,owners name was Keith Black,

JPL

Always loved that Cobra shape and the way they carried it through to the first generation Viper.

That's what I was thinking.

The 427 cars were already too far.  They saddled the car with more weight than the front could handle, for the sake of getting more power than the rear tires could make use of.

With the power & torque curves of some modern V6s . . .  I think it's an open question whether the best overall motor for that car is still a V8 at all.

The small block V8 ones are a much more easily managed package and still plenty potent.  But if you are going up against Grand Sport Vettes...

I've driven a few Cobra Replicas 2001 Super Performance & a 90's Stallion both 427 67 Cobra replica's, the 2001 had an all aluminum BB, from Shelby performance a few years ago, it handled as good as the 90's version with an aluminum headed 400+ci Iron block Small Ford stroker... Both had about 550hp, both had way better brakes, way better tires & suspension {shocks at-least} than the originals ever had & both were a real handful to drive... IMHFO all the extra weight of a hemi up front {unless it's an Aluminum hemi} would make it, extremely unbalanced... BUT FUN AS HELL on straightaway's, UNTIL YOU HAD TO BRAKE.... Even an early 2000's Shelby CSX continuation version with a 289ci 315hp example a friend of mine has, is a real handful to drive, especially in the es-es or corners, let alone breaking into them, or accelerating out of them, you needed to be really precise with braking & throttle... IMHFO all Cobra's were really twitchy/squirrelly, the rear wanted to come around "at will", at-least on all of them I've driven, no matter which engine or weight of it, that they had... There's an old routine by Bill Cosby on one of his LP's/Records {remember those}, he had one of only 2 special made Cobra's 1 for him & 1 for Carroll Shelby... it's a hilarious account of his test drive.... I sill think they are one of the coolest car ever produced, especially the Daytona Coupe, but you better be paying complete attention when your driving one...

In this case the engine was added to a fiberglass replica. The car was basically built for this engine but to look like an AC Cobra. That doesn't mean it was any good for racing.
I have been a fan of the hemi since age 13 and anything that involves one of these pushes my antenna up. It is a kind of mechanical art. I recall a guy put an allison aircraft 12cyl engine in a 62 chevy station wagon. This is good fun stuff especially when it is done well. Moparstuarts rat rod is a good example of my thinking. To celebrate the engine and have fun with it.

I have that Bill Cosby skit downloaded on my ipod as a matter of fact.

I just listened to that Bill Cosby skit. Great--I am surprised that I was hearing it for the first time. Bill Cosby is my favorite comic. Thanks for finding it.

Too funny .  A good long time friend was into the Viper crowd for years and told me many stories about his friends wrecking there cars. He said they worked very well but gave little warning when they were at the traction limit cornering.
Had a call from him one day. Guess what. No you didn't. Yes I did I wrecked my viper. He went into collecting parts for repairing Vipers and still does as far as I know.
