Quotejust someone calling to say you were walking down the road is NOT a justifiable reason to stop you, ask for ID and search your bag. You don't have to carry ID, this isn't Russia and you need papers to prove who you are. Remember you are innocent until proven guilty.

The public lost this right a long time ago.

Not to start cop-bashing, but most of the cops I have dealt with don't really believe in the public's right to refuse searches or walk around without I.D. anymore.  I've heard "if you've got nothing to hide then you wouldn't refuse" more times than I can count.

Just like these random DUI check-points, if i'm not swerving  on the road then you have no right to funnel me into a parking lot and demand my ID, registration and insurance

Personally I think these are very necessary. Just because you're driving safely, doesn't mean to say you're not driving under the influence or with a suspended licence or carrying illegal firearms etc. And the only way of determining whether driver's a breaking or flouting the law is with these random checks.
I've never objected to being pulled over. I see it as the police doing their job.

I'm all for random DUI checks, 'specially since I don't drink and drive after my first beer anymore.  :misbehaving:

i'm not bashing cops, its the policies that are implemented.  i don't drink and drive either but its wrong, if your worried about drunks then mandate every car be fitted with a device to blow before starting, oh wait, when it malfunctions and you can't drive your car you won't like it anymore

:2thumbs: yep, intimidation tactics at best, I think it's a hard job, especially when they're having to be dealing with scum all the time.. I wouldn't & don't want it, but I do respect the Police, when they aren't overstepping the rights of the individuals civil liberties...

Funny, I got a customer in the shop right now with one of those thingies on his Truck. Had to blow in that thing about 5 times each time I wanted to start it.
Sucks when you have to shut it off, re-start, shut it off again, etc. working on it. I did it, but it was a hassle. I guess it's better than letting someone drive drunk though.

What amazes me is the number of people who don't carry any form of ID with them. Had you been run over by someone while hiking along the road your body might have been stored in a morgue for a long time before anyone claimed your body. If you refuse to cooperate with the police you will go to jail and once again you might be there for awhile before they figure out who you are. Having an ID on you that day might have saved you some embarrasment that time.

Our society is not serious about solving the drunk driving issue.  We could drastically clean up the roads by punishing people differently depending on how drunk they are.  Instead we give everyone the same charge after just a couple of drinks and then we wonder why the system keeps letting the really dangerous people off easy.

The justice system isn't interested in solving the drinking/ driving problem.  There's too much money to be made.  Same way with the drug problems.

The justice system isn't interested in solving ANY problem, period. All they want to do is implement fines and jail time, not cure the problem. You want to cure the drug problem?? Make it a capital crime. Same with stealing. You get caught stealing drugs and we hang your ass twice just to be sure.

Never mind the drug problem, let's make it a capital crime for congressmen to let the federal deficit increase while they are in office.

Tilar

Why let the drug problem slide? As far as the capital crime for congressmen and the federal deficit, I'm all for it.  We were talking about something similar at work today. The superintendent is looking for another job and it came up that if a school superintendent hires someone and there is not enough money in the budget to pay for it, the money comes out of his/her pocket to pay that employee until a new budget is approved by the board. Apparently it's a state law.  :shruggy:

See, that's a problem in itself, as there are MANY who would pay to see that. Then the deficit would be reduced and they would take all the credit for coming up with the idea of charging folks to watch them. :brickwall: :P

bull

What it sounds like happened is that someone saw you and thought you were one of the scumbuckets dumping toxic waste and so they called you in. Once the cops arrived they found out two things very quickly, you had no ID and weren't carrying toxic waste. From that point the cops had to figure out who/what you were and so they used the weapons/bombs excuse because it probably falls under a far-reaching power of the Patriot Act. If you complain they can simply play the Patriot Act card and get a free pass. My suggestion is you start carrying your ID at all times and use something else to weight you down such as a weight belt or ankle weights. No ID and a backback is a red flag these days.

speedfreak68

If for no other reason, carry your ID so if you are hit by a car Police can have a general idea of who you are and who needs to be notified....it just makes sense...
