Rear 'hazards' flash with turn signals, any suggestions?

Hi guys, as part of the ongoing electrical ghost hunt in my '69, the above problem has just started to manifest. The dash was just taken out (steering box swap), and there are a couple of other issues too, so I guess I'll start by very carefully removing, checking, and refitting the dash. The fuel gauge stopped working, 'high beam' light constantly lit, and some flickering illumination, in addition to the previously burnt out AMP meter. I've had already moved both AMP meter wires to one terminal post on the gauge, and I've ordered the voltage stabiliser as recommended on the forums. I've not tried to ground the fuel tank sender wire yet to check fuel gauge functionality, , but will add it to the list.

But what about those damn rear hazards flashing with the turn signals? (Both rear turn signals flash, no matter which turn signal is applied. Only correct front one flashes in the hood, valance and dash tell-tale.)

possibly 4 way switch is on and the flasher is missing from the harness for the 4 ways

first guess

Thanks Bryan, but this is a recent development. Up until the dash was pulled, all was functioning correctly (I think...). The four way switch is there and they (the four ways and the switch) function/s correctly.

Hi,

I think the hazzard flashers and brake lights all get routed through the directional signal switch in the steering column. Any chance the switch itself or the wiring got damaged in the steering box swap? Or, possibly a cable coming out of the steering column got trapped between some metal and crushed? From some of the other things that no longer work it sounds like things got messed up with the dash board re-install so you may want to back over the wiring carefully and make sure all connectors are fully seated. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

thanks guys. I think we're going along the same lines. I had one non-start episode that was fixed by 'wiggling' the steering column multi-plug harness around, so I'll go back over the dash wiring and connectors carefully, and see what I'm left with... ::)

in my 68 the flashers would not blink unless the tail light sockets were properly seated. the flashers would just light up.
