My steering box sprung a leak, but it only leaks when the car is sitting on a hill (i.e., with the front of the car higher than the back) and the engine is running. Is it a bad input shaft seal? If so, is it difficult to replace that seal?

An odd coincidence. I have a steering fluid leak in my 69. Rather new install. Mine leaks while sitting and I think it is at the pump. Need to dive in and check it out.

After getting into my leak problem I found it to be at the valve body on top of the steering gear. There are three o rings that were flat and hard. My leak may not be like yours but a close look to find where it leaks could save you a lot of time and work. As for being on a hill when it leaks I think is a coincidence the pump is higher than the gear to begin with. Changing the seals in the steering gear is a chore.
