Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

At my H.S. in 79-82 if you were a Mopar guy you were considered to be a dark sinister character. An outlaw. The guys respected you and the women stayed away but were intrigued a little too.You usually had the fast car but all the girls would say that " it's old and ugly. Why don't you get a new Camaro or Trans Am?" and I would say"I'm not a wuss jock and don't want to go slower."  :yesnod:

I had a 73 Ranchero with a swapped in 351 Boss in high school.  I got my 71 Challenger 340 'vert my senior year but I don't recall driving it to school.  Seems to me I didn't drive it until very shortly after I graduated.  I didn't get my first Charger until I had been out of school for about two years.  I sure looked at a lot of them during those days though.  Just never found the "one" for a while I guess.

i did have my 74 for about 3 months of my sr year (spring 91). it was a bondo bucket but had really shiny dark blue metallic paint, and the white top looked pretty good. it wasnt even contested as the fastest car in school. however a buddy had a mazda (626?) that was reportedly pretty snappy (i never rode in it lol) and another friend had a ranchero with a beefy 351. i thought the ranchero might be quicker but the front end was so bad he wouldnt run em. he traded it in on a 5.0 mustang the week we graduated.

Bought my red 68 in 1978, raced it from 79-81, graduated high school in 1980, and it was my daily driver from

I wanted nothing more than to have a Charger in High School. I ended up with a rusty '69 Barracuda, which I made do with. This was in 1978, and I just turned 16.
My best friend at the time, Lynn Smith (a guy) was the son of the owner of the local (and only) general store in town. Due to over-generous parents, he had a more-than generous "allowance". This permitted a lot of purchasing power, which went towards copious amounts of cigarettes (legal or otherwise), beer (from the bootlegger) and the "real" Coke.
Lynn was a wheeler-dealer by nature, no doubt influened by his father, who was THE consumant businessman.
One fine fall day, we found out about a '69 Charger for sale in a trailer park not far from town, and set out to find it. I believe they call it "playing hookey".
It was being flogged by the local hotshoe -"Crazy" Larry Harvey, who acheived his nickname as a result of a head injury sustained in a rather nasty car accident, which brought about the demise of one of his school-mates, and his slide into a constant alcoholic state.
Larry had the tendancy to drive the balls off of anything he got into, and demonstrated this talent to Lynn and I when we showed up to check the car out. It carried a built 440/fourspeed combination, and a 4:10 Dana 60, which were all the ingrediants required to get sideways at any and all opportunities.
So, after an impressive demonstration, Lynn offered Larry the remains of a 1977 Pontiac Grand-Am 400 in a straight across trade. This car had been in a wreck, which demolished the entire passenger side, which is how Lynn came to buy it for $400.
Larry was driving a particularliy nice 1971 Bonnyville convertible (his shaggin wagon), which needed an engine, so the deal was struck.
From that time forward, we spent ALL of our time emulating the Duke boys on the back roads of our hamlet, and ruining what was left of our reputations and/or academic potential...
We even managed to jump the car off the ground several times by driving up a dirt road which joined the highway at an accute angle.
After about two years of trashing the life out of it, he sold the car to a fellow that took it to Detroit.
Needless to say, I found and bought my Charger in tribute to those absolutely nutty days of High School.

Back in 79-83 when I was in HS I drove a late 70's Simon & Simon Power Wagon, I sure miss that truck. One of my buddys drove a 64 Chevelle SS which he got by trading a 74 Vega & a cool stereo for (he got the best of the deal) My other firend, who is now my bro in law drove a very immaculate white 65 Chevelle (his folks bought it new) man what a clean car, he still has it today...I kind of lived in a Chevy town I guess, your typical assortment of late 60's Camaros & early 70's Novas (where did those Novas all go?) the only Mopars I remember at school was a red 71 Cuda, a 62 Dart (with a 4 sp) & a 73 Charger driven by a history teacher...Boonie bashin in the P-Dub was a blast though...pulled a few Chevys out of the mud...
