Running without throttle bracket

That's right!  I just found this picture ODZKing posted and realized I have one of those in a box somewhere.  In other words, it's not installed...is that bad?

I have a '71 440 with edelbrock performer intake, non rpm.  I don't know why the brakcet was never installed, the bolt holes seem to line up just fine.

So apart from keeping the throttle cable in line, mine sticks a bit, what's the point of this thing?

Dino, While many have run without throttle brackets, I do not advise It.
Many do not run them due to the length of throttle cable being incorrect ONCE INSTALLED. It holds the housing to insure that the entire thing doesn't move. I think You'll fina this might be the case if installed. I always try to modify the original bracket to allow shorter cables to be run.

That explains why the bracket is in a box....they did all that work but didn't change the throttle cable...

Soooo, how much fun is it to swap one of those?  I need to crawl under the car and replace the transmission speedometer gear, can I tack this little project on there as well or do I need to take it to a mechanic with time and a lift?

Geez Dino, you need to post a pic of that mess. Without the proper throttle linkage you are not getting the carb to open fully. That will have a big impact on performance.

I guess I never realized seeing I rarely get it above 60.  A mess is the correct term alright!  I'll snap some pics and post them but likely not until tomorrow. 

Is the throttle cable I need shorter or longer than the sb cable?  If shorter, can I adapt the cable I have now or is that going to open up a can of worms?

Yes, it is quite easy Dino. You will be pleasently surprized I think. just have to see if those two bolts will come out of the firewall without breaking, and the clip onthe pedal linkage. After that, it's cake.

Most likely Longer due to the Raised deck height.

Behold!  The mess...

I know I know it looks horrible but I'm trying to focus on mechanically sound before I tend to aesthetics.

So I have a bracket, see pic here, which I assume is from the '71 440 intake that was originally on the engine.  The current intake is a plain Edelbrock performer.  Since the bracket was thrown in a box by whoever did the engine swap from 318 > 440 it either doesn't fit the intake or the cable was never changed.  My money is on the latter.

If I get the correct throttle cable, will this bracket simply bolt on?

Alos, the booster vacuum line tends to rub on the linkage, making the cable stick a bit.  I assume the hose is supposed to go through the bracket hole?

Btw, I took this pic when swapping a/c compressors, I do have the springs and all hooked up.

The Charger is a '69 which originally had a 318 and a 904.  It now has a '71 440 HP/727 with the eddy performer intake and the bracket I assume is from the '71 intake.  The eddy 1407 will be replaced with the TQ soon.  So, do I need a 68-70 throttle cable or a '71 cable?

Cable fits the bodystyle, not the year of engine. A 440 is a 440 is a 440. Don't matter if it's a 1968- or a 1978.
