Ok I'm getting ready to start rebuilding my 383 that is bored .060 over. It had steel shim (.020)gaskets in it before, should I use the steel again or is a stock gasket ok? This is the first non-stock engine I've rebuilt,so I'm not sure. And all the local parts places don't have stock of the steels and it order and ship north of the border gets pricey. I'm in no big rush, that cars not ready yet. :shruggy:

A383Wing

I always use Felpro gaskets

Bryan

ACUDANUT

I never had to use thicker gaskets. I always use felpro too.

Cooter

If sticking with the stock, Open chamber heads, then use the Original "Stell shim" gaskets, as the Fel Pro "Blue" gaskets will lower the compression enough so that one can feel it in the seat. :2thumbs:

The steel shim IS the stock gasket....that's what the factory used. Definately use the steel shim because it will maintain your static compression ratio. A thicker Felpro "blue" will lower your comp as Cooter mentioned above.  :yesnod:

I think i might have a new set of MP steel shim gaskets here at home. How far away are you from the Ontario border ?

This maybe a little over anal  :brickwall:  but, Also the "bore size" in the head gasket also will effect the compression some too, especially the thicker you go in head gaskets... check out you can figure out the differences in compression between 0.039" compressed Felpro head gasket & the 0.020" steel shim gasket or the differences in bore size volume in head gaskets also, some are much bigger bore than others, like larger CC bore & thicker gaskets are 4.375"-4.410"-4.440" vs 4.350"-4.380" usually in the thinner shim type gaskets {like original or some Mopar Performance}, it really depends on what head your using & the combustion chamber size, shape & style...

I found them in the basement packed in a box  :scope:  :icon_smile_big:

Still work in Ottawa but no longer live there....now located 10 minutes west of Cornwall along the St. Lawrence. Are you north along hwy 40 or south near hwy 20 ?

Either way we are not too far apart.  ;)

Good point Budnicks  :2thumbs:

Just for reference : the steel shim head gaskets displace just under 5cc while the smallest diameter Felpro (1009) comes in at 10cc so there is a 5cc gain. Some of the larger bore .050 gaskets are close to 15cc so you really need to pay close attention when selecting a head gasket.  :yesnod:

Hi Ron I'm just off the the 40. It takes my 35 mins ish to get to cornwall.Ya so not far at all. What do you want for them?
I'm not sure how to figure all that, but like I said when I took the engine apart thats what was in there mopar steel shim gasket. The dodge dealer has 90 set on B/O,I'm using 906 heads. This is how the engine came to me,so I figured I'd just rebuild what is there.

Cool, that would be an easy drive  :icon_smile_big:

I paid $50 for the pair a few years ago but i now see that Mopar Performance jacked the price up to $150 for the pair which seems crazy !!!  :coocoo:

You can have them for the same price I paid.....won't be needing them as the project went another direction and these are just sitting on the shelf. You get to save the tax as well
