Hurst shifter script

I've read that the thin script on the Hurst shifter handles was on "early" cars and eventually, the outlined script was brought in. If that's correct, has anyone got any idea when this time frame was? I'd like to confirm which script is proper for my Charger with a June 68 build date.

Thanks in advance.  :2thumbs:

I have never read about anyone who's sure about this. As you say the thin script and the later script are both correct for 69 but most peope can only say it changed "somewhere" in the 1969 modelyear but nobody ever says when "somewhere" exactly was.

NOS is nice, turbo's are neat, but when it comes to Mopars, there's no need to cheat...

Does it say on the fender tag if you got a hurst shift?  Did not know they installed the hurst from factory to customer?

Ghoste

Yes, beginning partway through 1968 they began to use Hurst shifters from the factory in Chrysler products.

Thanks for the responses. I am going to assume that the first Hurst shifters offered in the1968 models had the thin script, but any idea when in 1968 they switched from Inlsnd to Hurst?

My car does have other 1969 cues; newer wiper motor, flip down ashtray, fratzog emblem on the dash & no square buttons on the ends of the map pockets.

Ghoste

I don't think there is a even a firm date on that.  Sometime after January is all I've ever heard reliably.  And I think it was a "soft" change in that whatever Inland units were in stock at an assembly plant were used up before switching over rather than dumping the old stock and doing it all at once.

John_Kunkel

Thin script was '68-early '69.

January 17, 1969 is the changeover date.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

So, with that being said, what do you think my car, with a build date of June 68 should have?

I'd always thought that the Inlands were phased out starting in Feb and finishing in April.  :Twocents:  The latest Inland supplied '68 Charger I have information on is April 19th.

...and? Does it have a Hurst shifter? With the reverse light indicator?

yup, it has the reverse light and hurst shifter, but thats why i asked if they came from the factory that way.

Ghoste

As mentioned, the only thing agreed is that the change was sometime mid production run so yes, your car could have it form the factory based on that build date.  Do any of you 68 folks who track this sort of information have an example of earliest known change?

Mytur Binsdirti

So, for those who know, what's the best guess for the type of shifter script for a car with that build date; stick script or block script?   :shruggy:

Noone can argue with whichever one you choose since there is no definitive date for when they stopped. I like the early script. You don't see that too often and its what I run in my car.

Ghoste

Of course whichever one you pick, at the very first showing of the car some knucklehead is going to tell you it's wrong.

A June '68 build would have a Hurst with the thin script.

Looks like that's settled. Thanks all! :2thumbs:

Now all I have to do is find a console shift lever that's reasonably priced.  :eek2:
