Posting in another thread has kicked started my memory again and I figure I'd post this. Has anyone else heard that for '71/'72 Canadian dealerships had what was called the "Junior or JR." option Charger? It was pretty much a Charger SE but without he SE badges and only came with 6cyl engines. They did this so parents could buy their kids muscle cars without worrying about the muscle.

There was an article in a Canadian Classic car magazine which also showed an ad back from the early 70's.

The other question I have is would there be ANY way to track these cars down? I'd be interested in creating a registry if I could of these cars but I have no idea where to begin nor if it would be possible to do.

I have not heard of that.  :scope:     Sounds Like a Mystery to Solve.

Is there any Canadian Dealerships that you can get a hold of that might have offered this package??
Is there any one else on this site who has heard of this option?

MoparYoungGun

I have never heard of that. It's definitley possible though, maybe you can contact Galen? Just a though, good luck  !

KMPX2

There is no code for it in the White books

KMPX2

Going over the White books there are no 71 6cyl cars listed. There are about 1500 72's

Drache

It was a Canadian Only option so I don't know if that mattered but I might have been only in '72. Of course, not all of those 1500 6cyl cars would be "Junior" option cars. I had posted the article on the old D-C.com sight but I've since then lost the article. I just found one of my copies of the same Magazine, it was called "Canadian Classics" and they've had a few Chargers in their pages. You can back order any issue they've printed which is cool but I forgot the month and year when the article was!

Ok I accuatlly found that I had made scans of the article and had it online! They are over 1mb each so I can't post them... back when I didn't know how to scan good lol. Anyways I'll copy part of the article below, maybe Troy will throw this into the archive when we get one lol!

"The 1971-1972 Dodge Charger JR Special Edition was one Canadian example. The JR S/E was just a spruced up Charger coupe equiped with a 225 slant slant six engine. The package included full vinyl roof, chrome moldings on the doors and on the vinyl roof lower perimeter, body side moldings, back up lights, hideaway headlights, rally instrument panel, interior hood release, three point seat belts, and hidden windshield washers. The advertised price came out to about $2,999 (CDN) plus freight."

The car was available in:
Bay-King motors in Hamilton Ontario
McManus Motors in London Ontario

I guess only the fender tag could confirm which Chargers these truly were. It would list a whole mess of S/E options but only list a /6 engine.

These are clues on a fender tag to look for:
A07 - Special Value Package in 1972
A09 - Concealed headlamps
A77 - Spring Special Pacakge
A62 - Rallye instrument cluster
C12/C13 - three point seat belts
J15 - Cigarette lighter
J41 - Pedal Dress up
J64 - Wood grain dash
V1? - Vinyl top
M33 - body side moldings
S76 - premuim steering wheel
Y16 - sales bank car

Another code is look at the production date. If it was in the spring or late winter, say from Febuary onwards, it could be a JR S/E.

This is the only confirmed VIN of a JR S/E
WL21C2A177062

The only clues you may get are the date of production and a sales bank code. If the A07 code IS present, many of the individual codes making up the package won't appear as they wouldn't be counted twice.

Well there you have it! I'd really like to find out how many of these cars were sold and start a registry for them if I could find them! How would I go about doing this though?

Galen probably doesn't know or care about these cars since they aren't worth $$$$$$$$$. They were 6 cyl cars.
Lots of people talkin' , few of them know

The white book says A77 is a 74 code for a Sebring Sundance package. Here is A07:

ther are alot of 6cyl cars that are rare, don't forget 6cyl 4spd darts, they are pretty rare. All depends on how many were made.

KMPX2, I was just going by what the article said. As for the A07 package, I knew what it included, the article stated that if the A07 was on the fender tag, it would most likely not list each special package individually.

I've searched allpar.com and google with nothing else upon these cars. I'm trying to get ahold of the guy who wrote the article so I can find out where his information came from.

Well no real update at the moment. I sent a formal letter to Bay-King Motors in Hamilton Ontario and I'm awaiting a reply from them. I wrote hoping that they might still have records of the cars being sold and maybe the list of VIN numbers of the cars that were sold as the Junior package.

Too many "hopes" I guess.

Drache, as far as running a registry for these cars I would contact Chris or another member who runs one of the registries. I'm sure they can give you some info on how to do stuff and maybe give you some ideas. I hope that you end up getting some info from that dealership, definitley keep us posted and good luck to you  !

cudaken

My guess most of them where sold to older people. God, it would suck to be 17 and get one of them. OK, at 17 anything that moved was good, but to have a Badge on the Charger that marked it as Road Kill waiting to happen :'( Man,  would ripe of the badge as soon as I got the Charger.

Already contacted Chris and thanked him for his help and information!

Cudaken,
Sadly I think what happened to most of these cars were used for their parts and their original engines used as boat anchors. These 225's on these cars though were the "high performance" option /6's with 4 barrel carbs and such. Sure they weren't good as a 318 but I'm sure some kids didn't mind all that much.

I'm hoping to at least get their exact production dates which might help screening the cars. If it's an SE car sold between two certain dates I can ask for their vin and check if it had a /6. If it did then the odds of it being on of the Junior cars would almost figured out. Then hopefully they would have their fender tag so I could look for the Y16 code!
