Surprisingly, this article claims the smaller dogs tend to bite more often.

Bingo: •American Cocker Spaniel. A common breed in many homes in the United States, this dog does have tendencies to nip and bite at owners.

We had to put ours down. It was crazy. It would growl at me if I came near my own bed, then attack.

here in oz we have a nasty little f*cker called a silky terrier    small fluffy (like a Pomeranian but not white)   with an attitude like a doberman! when i was 6 one tried to rip my right thumb off !still have the scares and a thumb that works like its got an extra joint,bastard dog

Well, I actually know of two dachshund that started to eat their elderly owner when she fell and couldn't get up.

I got 3 little "Min-pin's" (spelling??) up here behind me on the next street. Every time I take Cappy for a walk...all 3 come out barking & try to nip my feet...

At the Post Office we tend to fear the smaller dogs...most of the letter carriers that I know have been bit by Poodles/Terriers/Spaniel's/Chihuahua and Dachshund's. For the most part we try to avoid the bigger more likely suspects like German Shepard's/Pit Bulls/Rottweilers and Doberman's but over all my years working I've had many more issues with the smaller ones. The absolute worst are the ones that don't appear to be aggressive but will just wander up and latch onto you. Happened to me twice with some type of sheepdog, never barked, never growled just walked up and bit me. I have honestly never had a problem with any Lab or Retriever. Maybe I've just been lucky with them.

My parents had a jack russel for 17 years it was simply nuts, could not trust it, he was tough as nails though, they had there share of small dogs and they would bite if anyone else tried to pet them. the best dog i actually have now, is my 11 year old pure bread pit bull, he loves people and children and is very trust worthy.I'm also a very responsible normal loving dog owner.I got him wwhen he was 3 months old.

My lager Dogs: Alaskan Malamute and Yellow lab are very mellow and I trust them around anyone.  My Malamute looks intimidating because he looks like a Wolf, but he is a big wuss around people but will kill any other animal that gets into our back yard. Including a Coyote.

True, & I bet in most cases the bite wasn't the fault of the dog as much as an owner, or previous abuse. Kids teasing animals is also common. I remember a friend finding it hilarious to torment their family dog. Nothing that would hurt it, but always something to agitate it to where it growled, snarled & chased him to within the limits of the chain it was on. You couldn't pay me enough to pet that dog.

UNION CITY, Calif. (AP) — A 6-year-old San Francisco Bay area boy has died after he was attacked by his family's dog.

Authorities say the attack occurred around 11 a.m. Monday at the boy's Union City home. The dog has been described as a pit bull or pit bull mix.

He died at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto. His name has not been released.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/13Qob5A ) that a man who answered the phone at the family's home declined to comment
