That first picture is with the ultraviolet flashlight.  They glow so it makes finding them at night easy.   This one has a arm in his mouth and the body in his claw as he eats another scorpion.    Yummy!

Is this about like me catching crawdads for fun, or do you have another purpose for catching them?

What's the best way of catching these anyway?  Do you reach behind and grab by the stinger or do you have another method?

skip68

It's just for something to do..  Pretty sad huh?   ;D   We scoop them with a small shovel.   These suckers are very fast.   They sometimes get in the house so we have to watch for that.   :rotz:    Either way, catching these and rattle snakes keeps the kids busy and out of our hair.   :icon_smile_wink:

Ouch & double ouch, my dog Buddy got nailed in the under side of his lip/muzzle by a Diamondback last summer, the size of the bite I think was small/baby one, but he could have died, was a costly adventure to the vet. I don't ever want to be struck, I've been hit in the boot & pant leg before a couple times, hiking fishing & collecting firewood, nearly got bit reaching in a hole on a Golf course in Rancho Murieta/South course 10th hole, tons of snakes there & here were I live, but none have ever punctured the skin, thank goodness... I hope I never will be either.... we use to have little some black scorpions, but haven't seen any for many years now...

I've been lucky.  A young cottonmouth got me when I was younger.  My shoe took the blunt of it, but I still had two little marks from it.  I never felt a thing.

skip68

You've been lucky.   :o   I was cutting firewood up in N Ca standing in some brush.  Right as I brought the chainsaw down on a log I felt this pinching, burning stinging on my lower leg.   I yelled Sh&* something bit me.  I thought a spider or bee got up my pant leg.   I jumped out of the brush, pulled my pant leg up and there was these nice two little holes with venom coming out.   I went up to my moms house and she squeezed the venom out  and called the hospital to talk to a snake bite expert.   They told her to rub rubbing alcohol on it and watch for swelling.   That reallllllly stung.   After about 45 minutes with no swelling I went back to cutting firewood but not the same spot.   I got lucky that day.  The scorpion was in my shoe and stung the hell out of me.  It was a real small scorpion maybe only 1 inch long.

Dang strokey, those are very deadly aren't they?  All the years growing up in the hills I've always wondered what a snake bite felt like.  We used to kill 3 to 5 rattlers a year.   It was actually surprising that it didn't hurt as bad as I thought it would.

Well we are in Nevada, an hour west of Vegas. Just to correct a statement "dingle-dorf" said regarding catching snakes..........we don't hunt snakes at all. If I do see one its going to get shot or its head cut off with a shovel.  The scorpion thing is kinda fun I have to admit.

When we first bought our property 30 years ago, the garden was pretty neglected and overgrown and when we started clearing it out we were amazed to find little black scorpions running about the place. We had no idea scorpions even existed in our neck of the woods. But we keep on top of things in the garden and apart from finding one on the bed just the one time, haven't encountered any since. Not during daylight hours anyway. Who knows what crawls around in the night when we're safely tucked up in bed.

Tomorrow is promised to no one.......drive your Charger today.
