Well...one thing after another..Got my car 90% complete and fill the transmission up with fluid, and it leaks from Every possible place it can leak from excluding the pan....
So I have options....
Buy a brand New tranny from speed shop for $1000 plus 13% tax
Put new seals in my excising tranny and then see if it works ok...
Take my tranny to a shop to have rebuilt for $1200 plus tax...
OR....Upgrade from the 727 tranny to ??
Any recommendations?...what would you do?

skip68

I'd say have it built to your specs.   Then you know what you have and it should be something you won't have to worry about for a long time.     :2thumbs:

Sorry to hear that Steve  :icon_smile_blackeye: I'd go to a rebutable shop and have it rebuilt as its piece of mind down the road. Send BIG SUGAR (RON) on here a PM as he knows some great shops near you I believe.

I think I'd try replacing your seals yourself first.  Why spend major money if you don't have to?  If that doesn't fix it, then I would agree with the others and have it rebuilt to your specs.

Is it the matching numbers trans to your car?

Cooter

I Assume that the engine/car in your Avatar is the one leaking? What would I do? Rebuild.

I would rebuild the trans. Your car looks awesome BTW.  :2thumbs:

I am not the tranny guruu here by any means but leaking everywhere is a clue to me something simple like over full? If it doesn't leak until it is running than the pump is making it leak. I have seen a vent fitting on top near the back of the main hsg. before. If not there must be another way for the housing to vent. Would be a shame to pull and rebuild it if that was all it was.

BBCharger

Dido, if it leaks everywhere I 'd check the vent first. If you choose to put new seals in check all of the shafts, etc for grooves or anything else that will prevent them from sealing. Good luck

Perhaps you didn't have the converter lined up and cracked the pump?

Didn't think of that. Would that make running the bolts up tough untill something gives? I have had almost everything that could happen come to me. Guess untill all has happened I am not done.

Patronus

Thats exactly what happens.

Yeah, when you install the tq, you shove it in, wiggle it around, then it will go in a little more.  If it didn't go farther in the 2nd time, you'll have some additional headaches.  Hopefully, you added a quart of fluid to the tq before you installed it.

Patronus

There's two flat spots you need to have engaged or lined up and the converter sits further into the bellhousing. Best be dropping it again. We can probably drop the Tremec in the Cuda in 5 minutes. Wanna race?

Convertor is properly installed........its leaking from the shafts, the dipstick tube.....and everywhere else it can lol if it was pressurised with water it would be a fountain...I know I could replace all seals and try it...BUT I dont want to take it apart put the seals in and find out it doesnt shift properly or whateve...so I want a new one...I may see it its the numbers matching one as I never looked...the engine is..
i cant seem to find a "great" tranny shop near me in southern ontario..........the local speed shop which is big on mopars rebuilds them and sells them....might be worth looking into if they will build mine if numbers match....if not i will buy one off the shelf
Thanks for all the replies

ws23rt

Sorry for thinking this is fun. When the converter turns the pump pumps. That fluid flow and pressure goes to the valve body. From there to the clutches. I would drop the pan and see if the valve body is loose. Or broken, or missing :shruggy:. Hey I don't know the trans history. I do know one thing it is simple. Does not mean easy or inexpensive.

Hey green

Theres a awesome tranny (sounds not quite right ) guy near me that has been building and racing Mopars since the 60's He built mine to my specs and his little country shop is out of this world to visit. Oh the shop is Fireball Transmissions near Morrisburg Ont.

Well, bought the Strip Strip Transmission from Rudy Helds Speed shop......for anyone local they will know the place been around Forever!....
Swapped it out yesterday, everything went very well and it just squeezed between the headers!..
Was $995 plus tax......very happy, its full and does not leak.....Had a hell of a time with the dipstick tube oring, tried three different ones before it found one that didnt pinch going in..

Now the questions..
How much fluid will it take....and if the 11" torque convertor was partially full?......

ws23rt

I am glad to see you are back with a new trans. Should take about 9 qts. When empty. What I do is but in 7 qts and start it. Shift through the gears and back to neutral and check level. Add as needed.
What I would like to know is what caused the old trans to do what it did.

well....it just sat for a long time and all the seals tried up i guess, and....embarassing.....the oring on dipstick tube was split!
