My speedometer is whining really bad... like a squeal at around 25mph... then goes away till maybe 60 and comes back... you guys think its the cable or the gauge?  Also, the gause"bounces" some... like the needle doesnt stay still at a constant speed.

Chances are it is the cable.  Easiest and cheapest thing to start off with also.

Yep, check the cable. Mine had the same problems. I pulled it out of the sheathing, cleaned it down with some WD-40, put some lube on it, no problems since.

Mine turned out to be the head itself.  It was doing the same thing you describe......

Ok.  I will try unhooking the cable at the gauge end and see if I still get the noise... that should eliminate one or the other!

As far as lube if it is the cable, what do you use?  White lithium?

haueter66

Ok.  Today I unhooked the cable from the gauge and went for a short drive.  No noise.  So, should I assume the gauge is bad?  Or could the cable make a noise hooked up because its under load and then not make the noise unhooked becuase no load?

I hate the thought of a $200 rebuild  ::)

Chryco Psycho

you have the cable unhooked so remove the inner drive cable & clean & lube it spray some lube into the housing as well

haueter66

Does the inner cable just slide out?

NHCharger

Yes. It's been so long since I did mine I can't remember. I think you push in the end that goes into the tranny, then pull it out from the speedo end.

Its not the cost of repair thats as upsetting as taking the cluster back out!  :icon_smile_angry:

Hi Guys,

I just love this web site.I too thought I would be tearing into the dash to fix the speedo, but not. I just did what was said on this thread and no noise and it reads very correct. All I did was lub up the speedo cable with a very lite grease. Thanks again from Chandler AZ.
