To change the factory color scheme on my charger?

My 70 RT, very complete and original panel car except floor pan. Engine is date correct non matching. Have the fender tag, no build  sheet yet. It will be a factory oem resto.

The factory color scheme is EB7, white interior, white vinyl top and white longitudinal stripes. I don't know... I'm just not a huge fan of this combo. I tried looking for a TX9 car, but either its silly money, or its a rusty heap.

haha, well in my opinion, it's your car, Paint it whatever colour you like, for some reason this is a common question, i never gave a thought to what any of my cars colours were originally, i just painted, or will paint them whatever i have my heart set on, i encourage you to do the same  :2thumbs:

Mytur Binsdirti

B7 blue is not my favorite either. I vote to change.

rick@laysons

If you intend to keep the car for a long time as your own driver, paint it any color you want and be happy with it.

If, however, you plan to restore it OEM and sell it for the best possible price, you would probably be better off to keep the factory colors for the paint and interior.

Troy

I love blue and white. Everyone else makes theirs black. They hardly made any black ones from the factory but everywhere you turn you'll see one now. You'll be a lot more unique and more people will appreciate the car if you keep it original. In the end, you're the one who has to be happy. It's a big expense to restore a car so you don't want to end up with something you don't even like (because you'll end up selling it at a loss and it would be cheaper just to go find a real black one). Cleaning a car as big as a Charger in black is a royal pain. Black interior is way hotter (miserable even) than a white one - although white interiors have their own cleaning challenges (I have 4 of them).

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

:popcrn:  I like B7, it's rare in 70 too... right?  not my favorite, but better than 1/2 the other colors IMO (without formally throwing them under the bus).  And it is an RT apparently and your chasing OE... stay correct (short of maybe some bolt ons)  :Twocents:

I agree if it has all the original stuff in good shape. (survivor) It would be a shame to mess with it. Once the door is open to change it can be changed a hundred times and be the same. It is only original once.

Big Sugar

Even if it was a numbers matching rare option car !, I would still paint it the colour i wanted , even  if it wasn't a factory option colour.
Your building your dream don't compromise because your worried what others will think.

A thing I really like about this forum is that you're not being judged if you change your car color or if you make a General Lee replica.. I don't know why but in Italy there are many "talebans" in our bigger U.S. cars forum.
go for whatever you like and enjoy it!

Our car was originally  Blue, not sure if it was B7 as we have no build sheet, but we found medium blue outside, in trunk, under dash.... The previous owner painted our car Sublime.... The paint was bad so we could have go e back to blue, but we like the Lime and not many cars can get away with it.   All this being said, I agree with many others that its your car and your choices!  Pick what you've always wanted so when you walk In the garage you smile each time!!!   :yesnod:

No offense to the 318/383 guys changing body/interior colors, engines, etc, but on a real R/T I'd be leaving it the orignal colors. As Troy commented to go out and get a real one, thats what I did,it took tens years to have it come accrosss my plate, but it did.Just as you desire,a black one.

EB7 is fairly scarce & with white it is a HOT combination!  :yesnod:

If you change the color it becomes customized vs. restored.

Would this mean that if later is was repainted the original color it would become restored again. Works for me.
I guess we all have different ideas about the meaning of the words we use.

I bought a coronet rt hemi 4sp car in 1980 cause that was what I wanted to drive and enjoy for what it was. After many years waiting to be road worthy a couple of years ago it is a driver. It has all original metal, Drivers seat redone

Well a sin seems a little harsh
Being it's an R/T and you are trying to go OEM I'd probably stick with the Blue/white combo. Bought my 70 back in 83 and I always wanted a red/black Charger. My best friend/car guru talked me into keeping the FC7/Black colors it came with and to be honest I have never been disappointed in sticking with the factory color. To this day I still don't have a red one but I have a B5/white 69 RT and a white/blue interior 69 XP(needing a total resto). It is a tough decision and I guess a person needs to do what makes them happy:icon_smile_big:. I painted my B7 R/T Silver.  It was silver when I bought 30 years ago.  It just wouldn't have been my car in a another color.

B5 and B7 are love-hate colors.  So, don't second guess your lack of attraction.

I wouldn't have ordered B7 new.  Let the next guy take it back to original.

That so looks like a car I used to have. I miss it. These cars are not so rare that you may not be able to find someone that would trade for a color you like. Or maybe borrow for a while like wifes.

For me, if I had a numbers-matching R/T, I would probaby paint it the colour it was from factory, and keep it original.

However, at the end of the day, it's YOUR car.
YOU'RE the one building it, and YOU'RE the one who's going to be driving and enjoying it, so do whatever you want!  :2thumbs:

Personally, I think B7 looks great. But I'm a long way from decided on a colour. B7, GM 'Voodoo' Blue, Blood Orange, Black...

Maybe just drive it for a while and see if the color starts to grow on you.  If it needs a restore then there are always a lot of things you can work on before the paint gets attention.  If there is time to make the decision then take that time.

JB400

What do you want to do to the car?  You're the one that has to look at it, drive it, baby it, pay for it, enjoy it, so, what's on your agenda for the car.

The way I look at it, you're the current keeper of the car.  Let the next guy decide what he wants to do to it.  You need to enjoy the car today.

Your car does look nice :2thumbs:

I want to have fun working on it, restoring it and eventually crusin in it...

I will go with black. You guys are right, I'm not restoring a museum piece. I just needed to think this over out loud. :2thumbs:

Well, the LAST thing I think ANY of us would want to do is hear at EVERY freakin' outing in the car we built to please ourselves, is "Damn, why the hell did you do that to such a fine car!?" by the average Joe and not ness. Mopar people. This is why we ask opinons. I think if your tired and NOT planning to sell it looking for that deep pocketed OEM buyer, then paint whatever you like.

I like the black, be ready though... It's upkeep is murder. Plus it's gotta be straight. Of course this is the case regardless of color..true.. Mine was R7 orig. To do it again I would find a modern more poppy color that resembles it..
I don't think I could spend all the time restoring something only to have it be exactly the same.

Everyone has their favorite colors.  If mine was orginally white top on blue with a white interior like yours, I'd keep it....cause blue and white cars are great.....but that's me.

My car is a numbers '68 R/t.......and is now MM-1 instead of the original JJ-1.   I can't stand Chrysler Gold from '68...it looks like poop.  But that's me.

I couldn't reason painting my car a color that I didn't like, just to keep it original.

I agree. I recently bought a restored 70 R/T, EW1 with green interior, white vinyl roof, green hood callouts, green stripe. My preference is FC7/black vinyl, black interior. I hesitated on the car, but it quickly grew on me to the point I like it and am proud of the unpopular colour combination. My 2 cents. But at the end of the day, it's your car. Before the charger, I had never owned a black car, never even wanted a black car (keeping it clean is a pain) but the wife insisted saying the charger definitely had to be black and after a bit I realised she was right and went along with it and am so glad I did. It looks awesome.

When I got the Pontiac LeMans it was a maroon colour and I decided to take this one back to it's original factory colour (mint turquoise) and it looks great BUT and here's the interesting bit........whenever I take it to a show, people are always telling me that's a nice colour but wouldn't it look terrific in red.  And yes, they always gravitate to the red ones there.
Go figure!
