69 383 with a blank vin pad - need input

I recently picked up a 69 383 auto, Y2 color code (but repainted red), good pans and panels throughout (minus the trunk which needs some work).  I got a smoking deal on the car (took it in a partial trade and some cash for a Viper) so, though I checked the numbers and codes, I didn't spend a lot of time worrying about them.

As it turns out, the body is numbers matching all the way - but the VIN pad on the engine is completely blank.  The motor has a 1968 date code but there is not now (and looks like there never was) anything stamped on the VIN pad.  I read somewhere that dealer replacements (for blown or defective motors) were sometimes replaced with blank blocks.  I'm guessing they were supposed to stamp them - but I have no idea.

Does anyone know if this is true or if there are any other explanations?  Also - I am now debating what to do with the car.  Does this basically open the door to swap the motor and move away from a numbers matching accurate restoration?  Should I just sell the motor - in other words, does it have any value to someone with a unique 383 project with a more interesting or unique set of accessories / codes?

Basically, I'm trying to figure out whether I should drop a built up 426 I already have on hand in place of the 383 (which I would sell), or whether I should spend the time and effort taking this thing back to stock all the way.  Any input and information is much appreciated.

Yes, you have a replacement block.  Did you happen to get any dealership papers with the car to verify any warranty info?  This block would be of interest to anyone wanting to do a factory type resto with period correct parts.  If this is the type of car you're wanting, then you should hold on to it.

As far as dropping the hemi in, if that's what you want, go for it. :2thumbs:

Could be a 68 transplant engine. Check the pad at the base of the distributor for numbers.

Thanks to both of you for getting back to me quickly.

I did not find any dealership papers, older service docs, or a build sheet under the seats or carpet (haven't dismantled the glove box yet).  However, I found an index card under the back seat with about 20 girls names and numbers on it.  Made me laugh (especially since they were names like Candy, Jewel, Bambi, etc.).  Figure I will put it in the build book along with one of those great old Charger ads.

I will look for numbers at the base of the distributor later today when I finish up with work.  Thanks for the suggestion.

I was originally planning on using the 426.  It's looking more and more like that's the direction I'm going to go.

The other option is that the block has been decked. I had my original 383 decked, and it removed all the text off the pad.   :brickwall:   Ooops..    :icon_smile_dissapprove:

ETA: Talking about the data flat up by the distributor.
JUNKTRAVELER: all I've seen in this thread is a bunch of bullies and 3 guys that actually give a crap.
